Got a modded WII from friend

Version 3.1 and he previously modded it with a mod chip. We bought a retail version of the WII fit and tried to run it, but it wanted to upgrade the firmware and warned of bricking if the wii is upgraded.

Is a softmod needed to bypass the upgrade if the machine is already hardware modded? Is there a program to strip the firmware upgrade from the DVD?

Wiiscrubber will strip the update. But, you will probably need ios from the game to work and definitely for games made after wii fit. You will have to do a bit of searching but everything is on this board.
