I am new to this and have managed to softmod wii but still running HBC 1.0.3. It prompts me to upgrade to 1.0.6 but each time takes me to a hackmii installer v0.6 screen stating "This installer can NOT continue!"

Sounds like you've had cIOSCorp installed. You need to install a clean IOS36, follow this: [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]
If you don't have cIOSCorp, then do only up to Step 4.
