Red face What should I do? Backups work less and less often

    Hello everyone,

I've been off the Wii scene for a while so be understanding with me please. I have a Wii that I bought in July 2007 if I remember correctly and I have a Wiikey on it (first generation)

I'm pretty sure I have the latest firmware (1.9s) and 4.0U for my Wii.

I noticed that some of my games just don't work anymore. Sometimes I can play for a while and it crashes while I play, and sometimes it just doesn't boot at all, I get an error message(DRE) saying to turn off the console and start again.

Now I'm completely lost, I don't even know where to start. I tried cleaning the lens with that official cleaner from nintendo, didn't do sh*t. Tried to burn dvds on 2 different drives and 2 different brands. I always use DVD-R. Tried to burn at the minimal speed, maximal speed, doesn't work either. I even tried to adjust the lens (POT) but it didn't change anything. From what I can see my chip seems to be still soldered. What can I do about this? I had the problem even with the 3.2U firmware so I'm completely lost. I've read something about the IOS(even though I don't even know how to use these!) but I don't even know what they are for. Some games I've had burned 2 years ago that used to work fine don't work anymore.

Should I just unsolder that stupid chip and get a solderless chip instead? Replace the lens? Replace the DVD drive?

Right now I'm trying to play Super Smash Bros Brawl. Stupid thing doesn't even start, I get a DRE and I've burned it twice..worst part is, I know it worked before! I can hear the drive clicking and trying to read but it just doesn't recognize the DVD or it gives me a DRE. Should I replace the DVD Drive? Get rid of my Wiikey and install something else? Replace the lens?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

what dvd are you burning on? dvd-r verbatim at 4x are recommended

your lens might be kicking the bucket...

so there is an alternative to play through an external HDD, if you like you can do this instead of changing lens. Also loading will be faster and you wont need to change discs and stuff

Hey thanks a lot for your answer .I've been using other brands, a no-name brand (was crap, I stopped using them) and then I think I tried fudjifilm of something like that) I thought it would be allright because it says "RITEK" when I insert them in ImgBurn.

I don't remember which brand I was using 2 years ago but I know for sure they were a good brand, even possibily verbatims. The top was printable(I did print on them and they worked wonderfully for a while)

Maybe I should just replace the lens? I've seen a procedure with an external hard drive but I am not sure about this, it seems so complicated.. As I've been off the scene for a while there is a lot of technical terms I don't understand.

well i cannot advise youfor the lens replacement, there must be some guides around the forum but i have never looked into it.

i do know that DVD-rs are good for the lens and DVD+Rs are bad, cos they stress it too much, so thats what might have happened

In case you decide to switch to usb however, i can provide you with a really simple step to step guide, which for you it will be 100% safe(i say to you because your wii is old, and there is a technique for restoring bricked wiis that are pre-november 2008, like yours) and it will probably be fully recoverable to a virgin state in case you don't like it (which i do not think so)
have a look if you want:

    Easy fix

Softmod your wii. There are loads of guides on here on how to do it. You say you are on 3.2 which is the best for softmodding. Softmodding a chipped wii is ok, you will have a hybrid wii.
    After doing softmod.
Install cios rev 14. (Needed for newer games.
Install Neogamma R7 and turn 002 error fix on.
If you need help just ask.

I have used the cheapest of cheap discs and get no problems at all. Using imgburn and burning at x2.4.
However now use Neogamma R7 for USB loading.

don't go around advising ppl to use chip discs. This man's wii is 2 years old, the lens gets stressed by cheap discs over time, and you ll probably learn that too someday...

I upgraded my wii because I had to to play GH5...So I guess the best solution would be to use a USB Loader?

What is the difference between a softmod and the usb loader? I'm thinking USB loader has less chance of failing because it doesn't use disks anymore?

Oh, I almost forgot. I'm a woman Not that it changes anything lol

I never advised of using them I was just stating that with softmodding and using the right cios etc anything is possible.
Sorry Amyrosie, please do not use cheap discs.
If you can buy an external HD and use usb loading, games load faster and does not effect your lens.

Thanks messie for the heads up.

You need to softmod to be able to use the usb loader.
I myself use Neogamm r7 for usb loading but many people use usb loader gx.
