Hackmii won't load after hacked Wii is "re-virginized"

I posted something about this in this tutorial, but Dogeggs suggested that I might want to post the fix, in case someone else needs it.

The Issue: After performing what I thought was a complete clean-up of my Wii (following the steps in the tutorial linked above), I later decided to reinstall the HBC. The Hackmii installer said it could not continue, giving me the error message: "no vulnerable IOS found, can not install."

When I printed out the log from the attempted install, this is what it showed:

The Cause: I believe the problem was caused when cIOScorp modified twenty-two system IOS titles. It gave them the revision number 0xffff*, essentially telling Wii Update that they never needed to be updated (or downgraded, it appears). So, when I performed the downgrade/upgrade clean-up, these IOSes were left untouched.

The Solution: I'm sure there are many possible solutions, but as a noob I can only give you mine. With a lot of assistance from some fine people at WiiBrew, I was able to fix it by doing the following:

First, I downloaded NUS Downloader 1.2 (be sure you get this version, as the database integrated with the downloader), and downloaded the most recent versions of all the affected IOSes. Actually, I went from a list I was givenby SifJar, which looked like this:

In order to download these with NUSD, simply copy and paste each of these titles into the "title" box one at a time, and tick the "Pack > WAD" box and click on the download button. Leave the "version" box empty. Note that you will have to clear the boxes after every download. This was not as unpleasant as it appears. :)

Second, I downloaded Wad Manager 1.5 and the cIOS38_rev14 installer.

Third, I placed all the downloaded wad files into the "wad" folder on my SD card, and copied the cIOS38_rev14 installer to the root of the card (renaming it to boot.dol, of course). If your card still has the boot.elf file on it, rename it to anything else, to avoid confusion.

Fourth, using the default IOS60, I installed cIOS38 rev14 (otherwise known as IOS249) from the SD card (also the default choice) to the system. The purpose of this was to give me an IOS that would run Wad Manager.

Fifth, I removed the cIOS38_rev14 installer from my SD card, and copied the Wad Manager installer to its root. Again, rename files as described above.

Sixth, using the default IOS249, I launched Wad Manager 1.5 and directed it to install (one at a time, naturally) the 26 wad files I had copied to the "wad" folder on my SD card.

Lastly, I ran the Hackmii installer without any errors. The Homebrew Channel was back again! To verify that the wad files had indeed been changed, I printed out the log again:

Prevention: To prevent this from happening when doing a system cleanup (or should I say, a really OCD system cleanup), you could use either Dop IOS or NUS Downloader + Wad Manager to replace all the IOSes that cIOScorp gives a 0xffff* revision number.

I'm thinking this is exactly what I need to do to fix my friends wii but I have not had much wii hacking experience and I have a question. What is being done between the third and fourth step? You seem to go from having the files all put on the SD card to suddenly running them on the wii. How do I trip the wii into running the boot.dol we have put on the sd card in step 3? If "using the default ios60" is the instruction, then I guess I don't know what that means.

Looks like I have the same question for starting step six. How am I launching the boot.dol from the sd card?


background info on pal's wii - 4.1u. tried doing hack stuff on his own. went through most all of it (including cIOScorp stuff), had some problems or didn't understand something so he ended up formatting the system. Now when trying to do the bannerbomb thing to install hbc he gets the error about no exploit available. I imagine it's from the changed cIOScorp files just like you had an issue with.

You trick into running the boot.dol just like you do when trying to first run your hackmii installer. you just put the cIOS38r14.dol onto the root of your SD card, rename it to boot.dol, then go into your wii system menu and get to it from there the same way you did on your first install.




nice post. i just started learnin about this stuff last night, and i tried to clean it all up and start over because i was having lots of freeze up errors, and my log file appears to be the same as yours. I'll def give this a shot when my computer is freed up.

You could just have installed ios36 original from N and then run hackmii, it would work

right call me stupid or whateve, but after trying to do what has been said in the guide(yes ive broke my wii after tinkering too much)

i tried this and went into the menu and channels but nothing came up on the SD card.
it was as though nothing was there.but before when it had boot.elf it came up ?

what am i doing wrong?

actually , to run it with bannerbomb, you have to put only the content of the folder in the sd root, the boot. dol that is
