Currently Homebrew works off SD card, no alternatives yet.
Tear up the Wii? :(
No idea what that means, I'm sure the Wii doesn't get too upset by the use of SD cards and it's a non envasive procedure plugging the SD in.

No Twilight Hack or Twilight Game? Try Searching the forums for Banner Bomb, it is the latest exploit for wii and even works on the 4.0 firmware but you will need an SD Card to do it (on the bright side you don't need to rent any discs)
You'll always need an SD card to initially "install" the modifications.
If you just want to be able to run backups (burning or USB HD), you can install the channel on your Wii and then remove the SD card (e.g. if you have borrowed it from someone).
Then again, an SD card is practically free at the moment...
