Install as in that they'll be playable from there?

    Be on 4.0 or 4.1

Install wad as normal using wad manager.

Go to System settings in Wii and Move Channel to SD card.

From the SD card menu on the home screen load the game you want.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.

When I go to the sd channel the whole system freezes. also when I go to sd card in settings>channels. It asks me if I want to load boot.elf then freezes.

I tried removing boot.elf from the sd card because I didn't think I would need it anymore since I already installed it the first time, but it still does the same thing?

I had the same problem with the sd card and its freezing. What I did was go to the sd card Root then private then wii then title at this point look for a folder with the name "aktn" (maybe its a different name for you) inside of the folder should have content.bin with a size of 52.1KB deleting this and the folder the content was in should stop the freezing.

Clearly you have a hack on your SD that the Wii doesn't like. Once you've hacked once you shouldn't need it anymore.

Is it at all possible to get wiiware through the homebrew channel without having to pay for it?

Try removing all files used for bannerbomb as even if you have removed boot.elf the bannerbomb files remain. When i was (in my ignorance of youth0 hacking my wii i didn't put boot.elf on my root directory and the 'load boot.elf' message still appeared.
