Overwhelmed....

All of this softmodding is really overwhelming.

All I hear is terminology I'm not familiar with, which stinks because I'm really trying to learn how this all works.

Here's what I want to do with my Wii.

1. Play burnt Wii games from dvds.

That's it. Now I've seen several different tutorials, each with a handful of extra things to download and every single tutorial is different.

My current FW for my Wii is 3.3u if that helps anyone. What I'm asking for is the easiest, most simply put guide for me to do this. If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated.

some ppl are gonna so not to but iv i was you i would update to 4.0u then use banner bomb to install hbc. IMO its the fastest easiest way to install hbc. and use this tut. you will need wireless to install some of the things,,..

Alright so after I complete this small tut, I can just place in a DVDR with a Wii game on it, and run it smoothly ?

Any risks, bricking, that might happen ?

Well... Yes... It would not be responsible to say that there is no chance of bricking the unit. But the chances are slim to none if you follow that tutorial verbatim. In the future, if you plan on doing any more tweaks to the console, look into preloader and/or Bootmii.

To avoid any hassles, burn your games at a slow speed (4x or less) on DVD-R media. And you should be good to go.

after the tut. you will have to get a back up launcher. that tut is just how to get hbc on a 4.0fw. i would get either neogamma r4or r6 ( i havent had any luck installing r6 so idont know how good it is) and like fred said there is always a chance u will brick ur wii but if u follow the tut u should be ok. and if u install preloader be very careful bc u take a chance of corrupting ur system menu. like another member on here said in another post "preloader is like playin russion roulette and the prize is a bullet proof vest"

That right there ^ is what screws new people up when they are trying to do something the first time around. The people who do these quides, go to great lengths to ensure the steps they have written are tried and true. I even see them update them when changes in a process needs to be done.

You should continue to follow a guide through every step. The above will contine to step him through the installation of a backup loader. Once you step away from a guide, and are unsure what you are doing.. and may be unsure what all of the steps really do... you can become easily confused, and screwed.

Those that have already modded their units all have preferences to what setup they like. After this person steps through the guide... and gets thing working... than of course, there are all kind of options and opinions out there.

Alright HBC installed great, now I'm moving on to the preloader.

I'm following the directions of Stayon4 but I can't seem to get through this step here...

4). Load IOS Downgrader 1.0 and follow any prompts until it's complete.

Now when I open up the HBC and run IOS Downgrader, it boots up fine, and the rainbow screen pops up, followed by Initializing network, please wait. . .

It's been at that screen for a few minutes now, what exactly is the downgrader, is it neccessary ?

Argh this is really frustrating.

Like a D-Box I'm attempting to do this on a 3.3u Wii, I totally missed the part on updating to a 4.0 and then following the steps.

Now I'm going to start all over, should I format the wii memory, or is there a safer way of doing this ?

Also how do I go about updating from 3.3u to virgin 4.0u and FINALLY what does 'virgin' mean in the hacking scene.

That tutorial you link said do not try on LU64 model, do you know of any tutorial for LU64?

matt. the only thing i can say is use the wii system update. to update to 4.0 "virgin" means as in it didnt have hbc on it but i have walked ppl that had hbc on it and updated to 4.0 through the wii system and they where able to still get hbc on it with that tut.
