How can I tell if my Wii is Modchipped or Softmodded?

I bought a Wii that was already premodded. Is it possible to tell without opening up the Wii?

if you put a backup into the Wii and it just boots straight off the bat, its definately gonna have a chip.

If you have to load it through somekinda backup lancher then chances are its softmodded.

i would say its more likely that its been softmodded as its so much cheaper and faster, if i was selling modded Wiis, I'd sell them softmodded.

you can patch your system menu to play backups straight up, so it can be decieving.

    hardmodded wiis would be heavier

Possibly just check to see if the wii was tampered with? See if the screws look alittle worn. I am not sure if the wii's have a piece of tape over the casing which tells them if the wii was ever opened, but if so, check that.

see if you have the homebrew channel, if yes, enter that channel, do you have a backup launcher? if yes, you probably have only softmod (although slight chance of still be a hard mod), no Homebrew channel and you almost definitely have a hard mod (although again, could have softmod then deleted HBC, for what reason i do not know, but possible)

If I had a modchip, would I need to update the backup loader to play newer games such as Punch Out? That's what I needed to do to get the game to load. However, the system also seem like it was opened before.
