Thumbs down Wii homebrew crash - help required!

    Hello,

My wii (4.1E) has been soft modded for years, running USB loader and DiosMios 2.2+ without error, I have been loading game backups from external HDD and gamecube backups perfectly fine until last week.

All of a sudden, my homebrew channels and the USB loader stopped working, crashing on a black screen with no controller whenever I try and access HBC or usb loader.

I have since reinstalled bootmii, HBC to no avail - still stuck on a black screen.

I deleted the HBC from the system memory and reinstalled - no luck

So I thought I would back up my save games from the wii system memory, reformat and start afresh. Now after formatting the wii system memory, I assumed I would be back to square one and could try to re-hack the wii as if it was a virgin wii. I updated to latest system version, but the wii is still on 4.1E

However, it still isn't working. I got as far as installing HBC and BootMii but now I still get stuck on a black screen when loading HBC and for some reason Priiloader is still installed despite the factory reset?
I tried going through priiloader to get to load HBC and get stuck on a black screen, I've tried going direct from bootmii, I've even tried loading Modmii from priiloader but it seems to get stuck at this point regardless of what I try.

What do I do now? I cannot seem to get past the HBC/bootmii install procedure so cannot check the cIOS stubs or install the IOS update to get onto 4.3E. I have tried using smashstack and bannerbomb to install HBC, both with the same outcome.

Am I correct in thinking there may be a corruption in a segment of the nand that is making it glitch? I have tried several different sd cards also so I know that the issue is not with the SD access.

Thanks in advance, I would hate to lose access to all of my game backups!

You have successfully demonstrated the "try everything and see what sticks" method of modding, and as you can see by you posting this now, that doesn't work.

Have you tried our Softmod Any Wii guide? If not, use it reinstall everything, even the items that it says is optional, to try to clean up whatever mess you created.

You can also post a syscheck so we can see how messed up this mod currently is, but we will then likely turn around and tell you to remod it with Softmod Any Wii anyway.

Guides to Softmod Any Wii and syscheck are linked in my signature.

I used the guide here to mod the wii originally, so I know that it worked, and it has done for years. My "see what sticks" method was literally a last ditch attempt to see if I could rectify the problem and get the hbc to boot somehow, as I know that if I *could* get it to load I would be able to use MMM to check for any dropped cIOS and update any redundant stubs.

I can't run a syscheck as I can't get into to HBC, neither can I run any installed programs from within priiloader, everything just hangs and crashes when attempting to load.
I also cannot uninstall anything as the only thing I can currently access is the system settings and the save data, which was all wiped when I factory reset.

The thing that confuses me is that I cannot seem to update via the internet to 4.3E either, I applied the update, the wii told me I was on the highest firmware and it is still on 4.1E ?

    EDIT:
The "mess I created" isn't any error of mine, it was playing absolutely fine. I was playing a game on the wii, from the hdd back up and it froze. When I rebooted the wii, these issues started. Nothing updated, nothing was connected to the internet, I turned it all off. As I said, it's been successfully modded for years, I've also modded my mother's wii which is still working fine, so is my daughters. It is just this one that is having the issues, which was modded at the exact same time with the same files using the same process (the tutorial you mentioned is the one I used for ALL the wii's)

Can you get into priiloader? If so, you should be able to access other apps such as installers and Syscheck

When llaffer spoke of the "mess you created" he was speaking of all the stuff you did after your Wii stopped working correctly. And he's correct, you made a heck of a mess of things. Did you know that a format does not return you to stock? All it does is wipe system settings, channels and game saves. It does nothing to your operating system. That's why priiloader is still there, and you now have an even bigger mess on your hands.

Sorry if I'm taking it personally, but by your response above it appeared as though you were trying to justify the fail route you took, and that somehow llaffer was mistaken in his assessment of the situation. I can assure you he was entirely correct. The guy knows what he's talking about. You should accept the slight scolding you received, and with gratitude that he cares enough to try to help in the first place. 'Nuff said lol.

Yep, I can get into priiloader, but I cannot load anything from within it as when I try, it hangs and crashes again. I will redownload the syscheck app and re-attempt it once I have returned from my holiday next week, thanks

cjizzle, I think you are taking it a little personally, I was not meaning to come across as trying to justify the route I took, I was just attempting to clarify where the error came from in the first place - I misunderstood his message to me and upon re-reading it now I see where you are coming from, I apologise if this didn't come across in my reply, and I am incredibly grateful for the help, I do understand that he is correct, hence why I came here for advice!
Again, apologies if that didn't come across in my post - please don't think that I was in anyway suggesting otherwise

As for the formatting, I was not aware that it didn't change the OS, I assumed that it was like a PC and formatting would return it to stock settings - however, now I am aware of that I will keep it in mind for the future, I simply wished to try and solve the issue myself and thought that if I erased all the settings and got it back to "stock" settings, I would be able to reinstall the hbc from a fresh install as sadly I no longer have the original nand backup from the first time I softmodded the wii.

To be honest, the wii is in no way more damaged than when it first crashed as all I have been able to do is reinstall bootmii and the HBC after deleting the HBC from the wii memory, if the format did not alter the OS than any of the cIOS files that were damaged and causing the first crash have not been changed as I've not been able to load the HBC to install any wads or cIOS files, I simply replaced the old HBC with a newer install - surely this wouldn't have changed much in the way of cIOS and system files? I assume that this is much like uninstalling and reinstalling a defective piece of windows software.

again, if my assumptions are wrong I would gratefully appreciate the advice and any help to repair the crash, I am fully accepting that I have probably made an error in the way I went about trying to fix things, I simply wish to get the homebrew channel working again.

Thanks again, and my apologies for my inclarity!
