RVL-101, controller options for GCN from USB/SD?

Hello all. New here but not new to hardware/software modding.

I have gotten my hands on the (in)famous RVL-101 with no hardware support for gamecube discs or controllers.
I've done my homework and have a good idea exactly where things stand with this unit.

    a) It canNOT load gamecube discs (or burned media): No big deal here. It has NO support for gamecube controllers: Not a big deal, IF there's another controller option for GCN.

    b) It CAN still support the software end of gamecube. I.e. it can load gamecube images from USB/SD on a modded unit.

    My question is with "b)"
considering the unit has no support for gamecube controllers, what controllers CAN be used with gamecube on a wii RVL-101? If any?
My understanding is that when the wii "boots" a gamecube game, it cuts off the wii controllers and waits for input from a gamecube controller port (which obviously doesn't exist in this case).

So, what gives. Is there any controller that works with gamecube games booted on a new (RVL-101) wii?

In my readings I heard that about two years ago someone in the homebrew community was working on a way to use the "classic/ classic pro" controllers with gamecube games on wii. I have been unable to verify this ever went anywhere.

Another option would be if someone ever figured out how to run gamecube games while still booted in "wii mode", this would allow a workaround of the issue at hand.

Thanks for any info on this guys.

    Well, at the moment you haven't got many options;

    1) Use Devolution (guide with info is in my signature). With Devolution you can use a PS3 Controller, Wii Classic Con/Classic Con Pro or even a Wii U Pro Con. You can also emulate the memory card of a GC and save the game data to SD or USB (my guide only details USB at the moment). However, for this option, you'll need access to a modded Wii that IS compatible with GameCube games (you can then transfer the verifications to your Wii/USB setup) or it is reported you can verify the discs if you have an adapter that makes them the size of normal DVDs.

Option 2 is waiting for Nintendont which will not require verification of the games. It will have similar functionality to Devolution aside from that.

Option 3 is to simply give up on GC games.

If I spelled something wrong, I'll just blame it on auto-correct

    Thanks for the clarification.

For option 3, there is always dolphin I suppose.

Guess my RVL-101 will strictly be used for the wii-nee-verse for now.

    ;-)

Yeah, if you can't get your hands on a GC Wii that's modded to at least barrow, you're better off waiting on Nintendont but no one knows how long it'll be before it's fit for a final release (currently it's in Alpha and can only play Wind Waker from the NTSC region code).

    Us Mb headers?

I just picked up a black model from eBay and was wondering about this as well. Has anybody looked to see if there is a difference in motherboards between the GC and non-GC supported models? I'm curious if Nintendo changed the board design, or simply didn't solder any GC controller connectors to the board. If it's the latter, then some careful soldering might enable the use of GC controllers again.

Well, I cannot verify this would work, but have been considering it. Get your solder paste out:

According to this article, one would believe that the mainboard in the RVL-101 is the same, minus the components for gamecube ports. But I myself wont be trying this until I see at least one other person verify that it works.

Yes, DeadlyFoez did manage to retrofit (if that's even the proper word, lol) GC ports and components onto a newer Wii that lacked the hardware. Unless you're hardcore and awesome at soldering, I'd avoid it --- cheaper and no serious time involved in acquiring an older Wii with the ports in the first place.

But where's the fun in that?

I'm glad to hear the serial header is still there, I might open my Wii up and take a look now that I know it's there. My interest lies mostly in using the GC controller for the few Wii games that support it. I don't have much interest in playing GC games at all.

If I get anywhere with it, I'll definitely post my results here.
