Silly question: has this drive/combo been known to work --- in other words, did this just develop or was this the first time you were attempting to use it?

I have an external Seagate that was going in to some power save spin down mode which would cause black screens or in Metroid doors would refuse to open. I never seen a reading disc message when playing from disc or USB. I don't think a power save mode would cause the message, more likely you would have the black screens and such.

BTW I could not find the software to change the setting on my seagate drive for download anywhere. It came pre installed on the drive itself though and luckily I remebered I made a backup of it that I was able to locate. Once I turned off the power save the drive has worked great for wii usb loading.

I've been using this thing for 2 years and its been working perfectly (and still is, minus the wii part). This problem came up just yesterday.

In terms of Wii, has this combination been working in the past, or did you only start trying this yesterday without success. It doesn't matter if it was used on PCs in the past, only on the Wii.

Your softmod is seriously out of spec/old. Find a post of llaffer's in this thread and click his sig. Update your softmod with the "Softmod ANY Wii" guide and see if that may solve the issue.

They are the latest, most stable versions (that guide is maintained and updated routinely when warranted).
