    installing IOS236 with malfunctioning Wii

    Hi guys

For no apparent reason, my Wii 4.3 (European) does not accept discs anymore, slides halfway in, spins and spits it out.

So I'm trying to copy my Wii games onto an external hard drive, but most tutorials involve inserting a disc into a Wii.

I've already got Homebrew installed etc. but the IOS236 installer app does not have IOS236, so I am trying to install via the 'IOS236 Installer' app.

Everything works fine until the end when it comes up with an error (-1) 'install failed' and it cannot find certain 'wap' files, I've kept all the files in their respective directories.

Has anyone come accross this problem before? have I missed any steps? and do you need any more details about my specs?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

This sounds more like a hardware issue, if your drive won't accept discs it's likely there is a probably with it.

Are you attempting the "Softmod ANY Wii" guide? Because it certainly sounds like it, so naturally I wonder why not post this there? There's also an Error Guide in the Recommended Guides section. I suspect you're likely not using the recommended SD card type/size.

Bottom line: ultimately you may well be able to softmod your Wii... but getting your retails into the USB HD via that wonky drive isn't going to work. You'd be left with the choice of replacing it, or doing something extra-legal and off site (and obviously cannot be discussed or supported on the forums).

That's a shame, so the only way I can copy my Wii games is through my Wii's disc drive? I was hoping for an alternative.

I could always try it through someone else's Wii.

You could do that or find a trustful source.
Please be careful if you decide to find a trustful source.
Also be aware that neither I or Wiihacks are telling you to do anything illegal as we don't support it.

    Just be careful doing that.

ret -1 means that the apps did not find what is was looking for. Typically this happens when trying to install and patch a cios from a wad source on the sd card, and it did not find the wad. This can be fix by formating the sd card with the panasonic sd formater and ensuring that all files are in their proper place on the card, or trying another card.

With that said there is no reason to be using that ios236 installer. Just follow the Guide: Softmod Any Wii, it does not use the ios236 installer and should work without issue.

As for you dvd drive, perhaps you are like me. I have 3 wii's each one seems to have an sd card or something stuck in the dvd drive, thanks to one of my 4 kids (not sure which one). Only way to fix that would be to disassemble the wii (not worth my time ATM).

Also ios 236 is not used by usb loaders or game rippers AFAIK.
