Devolution + Wiikey

I have installed Devolution on my Wii in the hope of playing Gamecube games from my USB drive. I have a WiiKey installed and therefore I can obviously play any backup GC games from a disc via the Disc Channel with no problems.

Is it possible to use backup discs to do the game verification for Devolution, or is an original disc essential?

I've tried it a few times using backup discs but I always get 4 flashes and it returns me to the HBC. So maybe it's not possible. But why not?

I've tried DIOS MIOS also but I find it very temperamental and lacking compatibility with many games. Devolution seems the way to go, but this verification process is a pain.

Devolution will only read official discs, sorry. You'll just have to get out your original game discs for the one time verification process (check my Devolution Guide in the tutorials section for all the info on Devolution).


Reason being teudj (the author of the program) did not want people downloading games and using burned copies to play these illegal backups. For this same reason he has not released the source code for Devolution so people cannot crack its anti-piracy measures.

How does Devolution know that it's not an original disc? Is there any modchip that can fool Devolution into thinking that it's an original disc?

I understand that the author put anti-piracy in place for his own reasons... but one would expect that to be a red flag to a bull on a site like this... a challenge to the community to circumvent its copy protection.

As far as I know, no. The ONLY way to play games with Devolution is to verify them with the ORIGINAL game discs. So if your trying to play pirated games your s.o.l, but if you have the legit discs then get em out and use them to verify.

Yes... I'm not trying to argue the morality of piracy here... I'd just be interested to know how and why Devolution can't be fooled while the Wii itself can be by the modchip. What does an original disc have that a backup doesn't?

An encrypted BCA file among other things, apparently each individual copy of a game has a differing offset in the first 8 or so bytes of the header...or so I have read. Which is why only legit discs will work, copies downloaded off the internet do not have the BCA info or the matching code offset contained in the first 8 bytes of the header.

I remember that NSMB used some form of BCA copy protection and the WiiKey firmware was updated to overcome it. So maybe Devolution could be fooled by a modchip?

All the time you'd spend figuring out how isn't worth it, just get your authentic games out and use them. Then you can put them away and probably never need them again.

Fine... I'm just a bit surprised at the lack of curiosity in beating the copy protection that Devolution uses. I would have thought it would be a hot topic of conversation.
