SD Card slot not working, can I use a flash drive instead?

I apologize ahead of time if I'm posting this in the wrong forum, It's been a while since I've been here for anything other than reading some of the TUTS.

Just purchased a Wii off craigslist, they claimed the DVD drive was broken due to it not reading discs after their child put two games in at the same time. Got it for 20$, brought it home, didn't read discs like I thought. Held the Wii upside down, shook it vigorously, and the Wii now reads discs just fine.

My question? Well, I went to install homebrew on it earlier today, but no matter how I formatted any of the 4 SDHC cards I had, I received the same error message.

"The device inserted in the SD Card Slot cannot be used."

I am 100% sure at least one of the cards I used was compatible (SanDisk SDHC 4GB Class 2) as my system menu is 4.3U.

Anyways, I blew into the slot a few times, later noticed my lips tasted like canned air, which means whoever had this before me clearly used a fair amount of compressed air to clean it out. Question is, can I diagnose the problem myself any other way?

    OR

Can I simply install homebrew via a USB Flash Drive. IF I can, I'd love to know how to go about it as if I can, I don't need to buy another Wii.

    Thanks in advance!

To me it sounds like your card is the problem. Your suppose 2 use 1 gig cards or 2 gigs at most. You can't use that kind of card that your using. I haven't updated either one of my 2 wiis in a while or read the faqs recently , but from what I remember that card is the wrong thing 2 be using. You got your wii for a great price. Almost better than what I got my 2 for.

Thanks for your reply. Butility I''ve been modding Wii's on 4.3U for a few years now as I buy and sell them frequently.

I know for a fact that the 4GB SanDisk card I was using was 100% compatible with 4.3U. Especially since the 4.3u I had just two days ago was using this very same card.

This morning I went out to a pawnshop, gave them a copy of Ninja Gaiden black, and kinectimals with 27$ and I picked out a white Wii with a white motion plus controller with the original box. I'd say it ws a steal considering I tested it all to be working before I left the shop. I got home, had it soft modded and updated to 4.3U in 15 minutes.

I put this Wii on craigslist for 100$ .

And I put the one with the faulty SD slot on craigslist for $50. Already got a call for the $50 Wii.

And some woman called to pick up an A/V cable and a copy of Wii sports for 20$. Kind of nuts, but hey! I love money.

This is about the 6 or 7th Wii I've modded and turned for a profit.

Needless to say, I know now it's a faulty SD port as I successfully modded this new Wii with the exact same card.

It would be nice still to figure out way is causing the problem. I ordered a tri wing screwdriver online to take the Wii apart in case I need to fix anything.
