Certain Disc Read errors... Bad Laser..?
Not sure if this is the right section of the forum to post this...
My Wii will read retail burned single layered and burned single layered backup game discs, but it struggles when I try to play my original, retail copy of SSBB. If I clean the disc really well, spray some compressed air in the disc slot and/or clean the laser with a cleaning kit and/or clean the disc really well, the disc will read about 1/3 of the time. This is an annoyance, but not one of my main problems...
My main problem is that my Wii has stopped reading DVD-movies on WiiMC. I know it has the right DVD Drive because my Wii is a launch Wii and I watched the (new) Nightmare on Elm Street DVD on it (from Redbox version, not sure if that matters) about 8 months ago. Now it won't read Requiem for a Dream (GF picked the movie for last night), or any other DVD I stick in it...
Also, it won't read a burned copy of SSBB that I burned at 4x speed on a Dual Layered DVD. Do I need a POT Tweak, a new laser or what? BTW I followed the instructions in this thread, burned the disc right, and installed everything that should be necessary, and I have a triwing screwdriver, so I can open my Wii up.

The first signs of the laser lens going bad is, not playing dual layer games and DVDs. Sounds like you will need to replace the lens.
Playing copied games is harder on the lens and will make it fail sooner than normal. That is why usb loading is better.

So, a POT tweak wouldn't help at all for the time being, or to extend the life of the laser? I'm looking to buy a USB HDD when I get my paycheck next week, so I probably won't be using Burned Games much anymore, just USB game backups, but I currently use it as my DVD player, and would like to be able to use a Dual-layered factory disc if a friend brings a game over that I don't have...
