Thumbs up i think i understand everything but my wii is VERY old and its causing some problems,

sorry for long post but i need to be clear.

the wii thats sitting accross the room right now was bought on launch day - 8th december 2006 by a family member, sadly it was the last gift i ever received from them. i never really play it. and thats partly the reason i guess. i only have 3 games for it. wii sports, twilight princess and resi evil:umbrella chronicles. its never been on the internet.

that said on with the question.
according to what iv read from this site and the various tutorial packs iv downloaded from the net i need to get the firmware version 3.2 however since my wii has never rly seen proper use i dont even have the 2.0 update yet which means i cant use SD cards to copy saved games right? if im wrong about that please tell me i read the tutorial packs carefully and tested both SD cards i have. the 1GB official nintendo one i have and a 2GB one i have. both failed. the SD card didnt even appear on data management but it appears in photo channel.
iv heard retail games have various firmware updates on it, just like the psp UMD's with which i know all too well.

so thats where i need help. seeing as 3.2 is the best firmware version i was wondering if theres a list available that shows which updates comes with which games. failing this i could buy a cheap copy of some recent game (iv heard super mario galaxy or metroid 3 will update) and then downgrade somehow?

id really appreciate your comments and critisms. right now im gona continue to read the tuts on this site.

Upgrade via Nintendo WiFi service. Downgrade using the tutorial in my signature.

I dont have wireless. thats why im going on about the whole updating without the internet.
also i got another question. i was under the impression from the other tutorials iv been reading that i DONT need to install a modchip or tamper with the hardware in anyway. but after look around on the site some more im not sure. is it possible to run backup wiigames, VC games and emulators purely on a softmod with the right firmware and patches..cuz i'd rather do that..

    What you can do:

Install the 3.1U update from Mario Galaxy.
    Install the Homebrew Channel.
Hope that the other HB applications that are installed do not require an internet connection.

Yes, You can play backup games, emulators, and vc from SOFTMOD ONLY !

You can update to 3.1U From the game mentioned above. Then install the homebrew channel with the twight light hack. You will not be able to use the downgraders or custom downgraders without internet..

You must get online for 2-5 minutes..

With that being said, please note that softmodding may be free, but its not nearly as reliable. I've never used softmod, only my chip, but from what i hear from friends and around the forum, it can be a big hazzle. Some games will require a lot of working on in order to be played, an some games will not play at all. With a nice chip and Homebrew channel, downgrader, starfall and so on, its litteraly just pop in and play.

And on the update problem, i'd just take the wii to a friend with wifi and connect it there. It's silly to go out and buy a game just to get the update, even if its cheap. That, or just borrow the game.

    constant patchs
    1 mess up = error
    no gamecube backups
    not region free
can be patched later on so if you update SOL
    some games dont work
    some only work so far
    and others require patchs
lots of side programs or add ons, like Gamma error 002 fix
errors are fixed often much later on

all of that to save 50 or so usd, when zelda is 40 xD seems stupid, but its peoples choice i made a Chip VS Gamma topic, this morning -,_-, if it makes a real difference

well as iv said i got TP and the wii together a VERY long time ago. and of course theres the matter of voiding the warrenty..not sure if a softmod will do that but meh..can always delete it and no one will know. and it may be silly to buy a game for an update but i was thinking if i get the 3.1 or whatever i wudnt have to update again. thats what iv done with other gizmos iv used with homebrew. and i thought, wi fi adapter..40 soo.. just buy a game with the update i need for less than half of that. but cuz i dont fully understand all of this yet i might have something wrong.
yaknow what..i might just end up borrowing one. but i just hate to be a burden! :P

i like ur words " cuz i dont fully understand all of this yet i might have something wrong.". so, take mod-chip instead of softchip, if u beli simply is beauty.
as ur wii is a 2006 veteran, the wiikey is 99% applicable. it's low cost and reliable. only 5 soldering connections.
    aft mod-chip, play a few games -- ssbBraw, metroid, sm_galaxy, mario-kart, wiiMusic -- and u're on....
