A few nub questions before I get started

    Hi guys,

So I've read through pretty much most of the guides and watched a few vids on Google and now I just want to ask you guys for some expert opinions before starting my adventure in the wonderful Wiihacks community.

I got my Wii on 1-12-09 and updated it to 3.4u as soon as I got it (nub move). My serial is LU627XXXXXX. Here are the questions:

    1. If I decide to go the chip route and my drive is a non-epoxy and the modchip I'll use is solderless/wiicliped then is all I have to do is install the chip and it will start playing back up? or do I have to flash the dvd drive and install other softwares as well like you have to with the xbox and 360?

    2. If I decide to go the softmod route and my system is 3.4u should I downgrade or must I downgrade to use twightlight? Also I read somewhere that using softmod you have to apply a lot of patches but I watched the vids on youtube and it seem pretty straight forward, just install it from the SD and thats it. What patches do i have to apply?

    3. Bonus question, what are the pro and con of using softmod in your expert opinions?

    Thank you very much,
    Kingk0ng

    1. When the chip is installed, it's always best to update to its latest firmware. The WiiKey 2, for example, has a config / update disc image available on the official website.

The WiiKey 2 will work out-of-the-box as-is though.

    2. You must downgrade when using the Twilight Hack on the 3.4 firmware. The 3.4 blocks all types of installations.

Patches ... well, they're not really patches to the applications, they're patches to the OS. When Nintendo releases a firmware, they're packed with anti-piracy material ... and some actual stuff you need to play the game. Hackers separate what you need from what you don't need, and release it as an "IOS" (Internal Operating System) file. These are all designated by number too.

For example, if you were to buy a retail copy of Animal Crossing and play it, it'd want to install the 3.4 firmware. When downgraded to the 3.2 firmware (the last good version for hackers), you can run AC by installing IOS38. You'll retain the good firmware and play the newest titles.

    3. I wouldn't really say that there is many pros vs cons. Hardmod + softmod is the way to go. You'll future proof your machine, maximize its disc compatibility, and even pull off some nifty functionality (install WiiWare / VC, play DivX, etc)

Thank you very much for the quick reply and clear explanation E. If I can find a chip that work on my system I will take your advice and go Hardmod+Softmod.

You can also check out the "Modchip Chart" link in my thread. It might help you select the model that fits your needs.

Also, for information on why you really don't want that 3.3 / 3.4 firmware, check the signature link again.
