Wii Stopped Recognizing My External HDD, Please Assist!

    Greetings Everyone,

I have a problem I am hoping you can help resolve. I attempted to fix this on my own a few months ago, but gave up. Now I'd really like to use my Wii again for some upcoming titles so I'd greatly appreciate the assistance.

I have a softmodded Wii that I use an external USB HDD to play games from. It was working fine for a long time, but one day it randomly decided to stop recognizing the HDD. It sounds like it won't power up and instead just spins the disc a little and the indicator light flashes on and off and I can't get any programs to recognize it or let it power up fully. The HDD has 2 partitions; a standard NTFS one and a WBFS formatted one. Please tell me what additional information I'll need to provide to get help with this issue.

    Thanks,
    Blackmage777

I know this HDD has worked before - but maybe this time a sleep mode is activated. What HDD are you using?

It is a Verbatim 320GB external USB HDD. Model #USB320. It looks like this one...

Do your remember changing any settings last time you used the HDD on the wii? What USB loader are you using? Maybe you should try another one - this is a very unusual problem you are having if you never made any changes.

To my knowledge I did not change any settings. I have tried USB Loader GX, WiiFlow, and possibly another one I can't recall. I just rejoined the partitions (I had an NTFS and a WBFS) and reformatted it. Still no luck. I ran Pimp My Wii so I know everything is up to date, but nothing I've tried has worked. I don't see how it could be drive damage if it loads up and reads/writes on my PC fine.

Could you post a syscheck? I'm stumped on what the problem is - but I'll try to find an answer for you.

Do other USB devices work on your wii? It sounds like a bad USB port/hub.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with how to do that. Could you point me to a tutorial page? Thank you so much for your help.

Clay10, I don't have any other USB devices large enough to test that. I have a 500MB USB stick, is there something I can test with that?

Also, interesting observation. I plugged the USB HDD into my friend's Wii (which is not softmodded) that has an orange light instead of a red light when it's off (which I think it's because he has WiiConnect24 enabled) and the HDD did the same thing it does when I start my Wii with it attached. It clicks a little and the blue light blinks, even though the Wii was off. Very strange...
