Any advice for a Japanese system owner? The original NTSC-U WAD will install OK, the channel shows up but I get a black screen with some text along the lines of "This channel is unavailable". I tried using freethewads to change the region to JP, but then I just get error -4100. Using the "free" region gives me the same error. Am I doing something wrong when using freethewads, or can anyone think of a reason for this error?

Since freethewads was corrupting the WAD or something in my case, I used anyregionchanger and set the "game" region to US, now the NTSC-U WAD is running fine on my 4.2J Wii.

Have you installed the latest ios56 as well, and you are using a NTSC-U Wad file on your NTSC-U Wii? If its a different region WAD you need to use Freethewads app to change the region. If you done all that, then I cant see why it wont run, maybe try a different source.
