Other M, Resident Evil 4, IOS issues, help plz

    Hi there

I was hoping I could get some help with my Wii 'cause it's driving me insane lately.

I'm a bit of a newbie to this hacking thing so bear with me. I have a hardmod setup (wiikey 2 I believe, I didn't install it myself). The console came with system 4.2. I could play most games right off the disk channel, some I had to instal the HBC and a loader (I used GeckoOS), and some (only some 5%) didn't work at all.

A specific game that comes to mind was RE4, which for some reason worked On and Off. Sometimes I would insert the disk and it would play from the disk channel without problems, other times it would display the "disk cannot be read" message on launch (then it was hit-and-miss, sometimes it'd work on second attempt, sometimes on fourth, sometimes I tried 20 times in a row and gave it up, then tried next day and it worked right away). I burned several copies to make sure it wasn't the disk, on different media even, and the result was always the same.

To be honest I haven't bothered with it much since it played almost all games I ever cared about, but recently it's been getting on my nerves. For about 2 months now I haven't been able to play RE4. I must have tried literally hundreds of times and nothing, just "disk cannot be read".

And more recently I went to give Other M a try and as you should all know it needed a system update. I went ahead with the update and it froze up on me right at the end. After much waiting I restarted the console, went to the Wii Settings to check and it was updated to 4.3E. The problems came afterwards: using a PAL disk (my console's region, boots off the disk channel) the console freezes and disconnects my remotes once it reads the disk. Using an NTSC disk (disk channel doesn't detect, have to use Gecko) it plays until that video after the tutorial, then freeze.

I did some searching and eventually read up on this freeze being IOS issues. I downloaded cIOS installer to try and fix the problem, but when asked to chose an IOS to work with, I chose 249 and the console freezes on me, just like when reading the PAL game disk.

So my idea was to clean up the Wii completely and then give anything I need (including the IOS) a fresh install and see if it fixes the problem. Any help with that?

Actually, you are wrong about that. Metroid: Other M does NOT need an update. It just tries to force people to update so they will lose homebrew. The only thing it needs is an updated IOS56.

Since you decided to update, you lost cIOS249. You need to reinstall a lot of stuff now.

Check here for more info on affected homebrew after the 4.3 update.

So I got screwed by Nintendo, huh...

Anyways, I'm usually the search and find it for myself type, but 57 pages

Any help narrowing it down? I didn't have that much installed anyway, the only program I had was the HBC and I've already installed that (through the Indiana Pwns).

Yeah, Nintendo's last two updates have been targeted attacks on homebrew, and have offered no new features. I can't really blame them for stubbing things like cIOS's, since they are used by pirates (neither I or Wiihacks.com supports piracy), but I never understood why they hate things like bootmii that are only there to protect your Wii from bricks.

Anyway, there is no need to remove all of your softmods. It may take a bit, but I suggest that you try this guide and see if your games work after. If you decide to downgrade to 4.1 (Step 2, Part 2), make sure all the Wads are correctly installed. Also, don't install Darkcorp.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I was just now trying to reinstall cIOS236 that was crashing on me too (something about an exception). Maybe going back to how things were is best.

    Hi, me again.

I followed that guide (what I could make of it) and got it back working. Still no luck with Other M though, now I'm getting the error 002 which seams to be pretty common too.

Anyways I first wanted to make sure the Wii is set up properly so I used sysCheck and thought I'd post the results here so you guys could tell me what IOSs I should update and whatnot (sorry for being a pain in the ass but I have no idea which ones I need, and there are just so many of them to patch one by one...).

Your IOSes are fine. I don't know about the error #002 for your hardmod.

Are you sure they're all as they should be?

I've been reading some guides and, for example, cIOS 38 seams to be recommended and yet I don't seam to have it.

Speaking of which, I just tried to install it (using this guide) and get error 1035, I assume if everything was working properly that wouldn't happen...

Most applications work with rev21 now, and the application that didn't are replaced by others.
If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

The fact that some games don't work on your hardmod has nothing to do with your cIOSes.

I may be coming across as stubborn, but I can't help but feel something IS broken.

For example, back to my original issue (OtherM), I used to be able to start the game, only in the dreaded cutscene after the tutorial if always froze. Now, using the exact same disk, it doesn't even launch. Since the hardware hasn't changed at all, this has to be a software issue...
