GUIDE: How to get New Super Mario Bros. Wii NTSC-U Working on Wasabi Zero and 3.2U

This guide will help you get playing a backup of New Super Mario Bros. Wii on your system with a Wasabi Zero on a Wii with 3.2U THROUGH THE DISC CHANNEL. This may work on other Wii system menus and it may work on other modchips, but since I don't have other systems to test it on, I can only say it works on mine. If you've followed these steps on another system and it worked, let us know! This is my first guide, and I apologize in advance for any errors I've made or any confusion I've caused. My goal is to ease confusion, not create more :D.

When you are done, you will be able to play New Super Mario Bros. Wii without the use of any backup loader. It will run from the Disc Channel, and it will no longer give you any of those annoying errors that tell you to eject your disc and restart your Wii.

DISCLAIMER:

This can brick or semi-brick your Wii as it will be altering system files. Do not follow this guide without the understanding that I can in no way guarantee that your system will not explode or gain sentience and cause the robot uprising and that while this has worked great for me, this may not work for you. I downgraded and reset my Wii back to virgin 3.2U before I did these steps, so if you're having trouble, I recommend you do this as well and then go through my steps again. If you have a new Wii, it may not be possible for you to downgrade to 4.2U and doing so may brick your Wii.

Also, none of these tools or ideas are mine. I'm just assembling the patchwork of stuff that other people have released in the last couple of days into a coherent guide for those of us who are confused.

I recommend that anyone following my steps has BootMii installed as boot2 and a backup of their NAND's data made.

Okay, and now that I have covered my butt, on with the guide.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

1.) A Wii system with a Wasabi Zero and 3.2U
2.) Homebrew Channel. There are many ways to install this. The most used now is the [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]
3.) A copy of Super Mario Bros Wii. NTSC-U. I used a full dump, but this may work with Trucha Discs. For the purposes of this guide, rename it qf-nsmbw.iso - do not ask me where to get this.
4.) [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]. Unrar sdcard.rar to the root of your SD card that you use for homebrew channel. Unrar patcher.rar to the folder that your qf-nsmbw.iso is at.

THE STEPS:

1.) Run qf-nsmbw.bat from the folder where your ISO and the contents of patcher.rar have been placed - it will create a file called qf-nsmbw.fixed.iso. Burn this.
2.) Go into homebrew channel.

These Steps will ensure that your IOSes are completely up to date without having to install them one-by-one in DOP-IOS . This is a good idea even if you aren't playing NSMB because it will ensure compatibility with newer games. You can skip steps 3-9 if your IOSes are already up to date. I have included DOP-IOS if you prefer to update your IOSes manually OR if you are going to attempt this with another system version. You don't want to follow these steps if you're using another system version as this will cause your Wii to either be downgraded or bricked (4.2u contains an IOS that conflicts with 3.2u and needs to be removed manually in order to downgrade.) I don't have a full list of which IOSes are necessary and which aren't, but if anyone knows, feel free to post them or PM me and I will add them to this guide.

3.) Run AnyRegionChanger.
4.) When you get to the menu, choose “Install System Menu 3.2”.
5.) When asked if you’re sure, choose yes.
6.) If asked if you want Korean Disc Support, choose no.
7.) When it asks if you want System Menu Hacks, choose yes.
8.) When everything finishes, press any key and it will take you to its menu again.
9.) Restart your Wii

These steps will install the patched IOS that is necessary for running NSMB:

10.) Go back to HBC
11.) Go to Wad Manager
12.) Navigate through the prompts, agreeing to any prompts.
13.) Install the file IOS53_v5149.wad
14.) Exit, reboot Wii.
15.) Place your backup disc in the Wii.
16.) Enjoy!

I hope this guide has worked for you. Again, these are not my ideas and not my tools. I have simply assembled them. I want to thank not only the people who have produced these tools and work arounds, but also all of the people who have dedicated their time to the Wii hacking scene so that we can benefit, because without them, well, this guide and this forum wouldn't even be here. And of course, thanks to Nintendo for making a great game. If you have the money, buy a copy for yourself or for someone you love.

Good luck, and please post here if this has or hasn't worked for you or if you've been brave and tested this out on a system with a different configuration. Make sure to hit the thanks button if this has helped you out. And by all means, for the love of god, warn us if your Wii has become Skynet. Let me know too if my archive's link is down or if something for whatever reason is not working in it, I'll be sure to post an updated version as soon as I possibly can.

PLEASE NOTE: For anyone who may have downloaded the file earlier, I forgot to rename AnyRegionChanger's dol file to boot.dol in the archive, you're going to want to rename the dol in the folder to boot.dol to run it. I have corrected this in the archive, so this is only for those people who had downloaded it before I put this note in.

Hi guys!

I'm having some issues playing a couple of games on my Nintendo Wii. But first of all let me put your all up to date:

Nintendo Wii
Firmware Ver. 3.2E
Wasabi Zero (solderless) installed
No other soft-mod installed

The thing is, so far I've been able to play all the Wii games I wanted, yet I'm having an annoying black screen and then freezing with some games.

The games in question are 'PES 2009' and 'New Super Mario Bros'.

I don't know what I need to do. I've recorded the games very slowly. The Wii firmware is only the 3.2E. I don't know...

What do I need to do to make this problem go away and peacefully play NSMB? :)

Let me thank you all in advance for your help!

Cheers

My Wii is running 3.2U and I have a Wasabi Zero installed that has been set to NOT to block domestic updates. Yesterday I bought a retail version of Lego Rockband for my sons birthday this weekend and I wanted to run it to create a custom character for him, but when I run the game (click start) the screen goes black and stays black. Only powering off will get me out.

From what I've found while searching today I need to upgrade the system through a backdoor method, but I've either not found the tutorial for this or I did, but didn't realize it when I saw it. All the talk about the ios, cios, wads, etc., have me confused since I'm not up on this stuff. My husband is usually the one to handle this but he's out of town until the weekend and I wanted to get this done for Saturday morning. We do have HBC loaded and Gamma something or other but I'm not sure of the versions.

Can someone please be so kind as to point me to the proper tutorial to get this done so I can run Lego RB?

Thanks tons guys.
Problem is that I am encountering the same problem, I burn the game and the Wii gave me the ? sign saying that it could not read the disc. Somehow Guitar Hero 3 and Guitar Hero Aerosmith are fine too. So I could say I only see the effect of the 4.2 update on the new Guitar Hero games (everything since World Tour). Does this make sense to anyone? Because as far as I read today I should not be able to play any backups at all?
