Take your gaming on the road

A few eyebrows were raised when we reported on the existence of the MaxPlay adapter, a newfangled contraption which allows you to power your Wii U console from your car's standard 12V cigarette lighter socket.

However, we can now report that this unique item is in fact the real deal, having tried it for ourselves. The MaxPlay allows you to play games on the GamePad from the comfort of the passenger seat — or anywhere else in the car, for that matter.

The MaxPlay not only provides juice to the console, but also comes with a USB charging cable so you can top-up the GamePad at the same time as well. Heck, there's even a standard mini-USB lead so you can replenish your mobile phone's battery if need be.

It's such a simple concept that it's amazing that it has taken this long to appear; after all, the Wii U GamePad is designed with portability in mind, and as long as the game you're playing supports off-TV play, it works a treat. We didn't get chance to ride our car over any massive potholes so we can't comment on how the Wii U's disc drive copes when things get bumpy, but you could always stick with eShop titles stored on the console's internal flash memory if you're worried about road conditions impacting performance.

The only real issue we experienced with the MaxPlay is that the Wii U doesn't fit all that snugly into a typical glove compartment; the one in our roomy European people carrier wasn't really big enough. Even if you do possess a large glove box, it's going to be tricky to ensure that the console doesn't come flying out when you slam on the brakes, because the power cable probably won't allow the glove compartment door to secure fully. It's possible that we'll see some kind of solution for this appearing in the future — perhaps a caddy which resides under your seat and keeps the console in place.

Those of you old enough to have spawned children will probably be eyeing this product with a massive smile on your face — what better solution for long, boring road trips than a Wii U console to keep your little one occupied? As you can see from our short video review below, our willing test subject was suitably impressed with the concept.

The MaxPlay adapter is available for around $25-$30, and is certainly worth a look if you find yourself travelling a lot with your parents or you're a parent yourself and want to keep your offspring silent for long journeys.

With the launch of Pokémon Rumble U—the first Wii U title to use the GamePad’s near-field communication (NFC) functionality—Nintendo have started discussing other potential uses for the tech.

“We are also exploring the possibility of using Wii U’s NFC functionality to provide a method for settling small payments in addition to creating new gameplay experiences,” Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata mentions in the financial results briefing outline.

To this end, Nintendo is considering using Suica, “the most popular public transport e-money card in Japan,” to facilate NFC payments. If used, it would mark the first instance a video game console took online payments with an e-money card card. Nintendo feels such a move would help “expand the potential of Wii U’s digital business.”

“We can make it dramatically easier for consumers to make payments, particularly small payments,” Iwata added. “Nintendo can expand its business opportunities that take advantage of small payments that were difficult to monetize in the past.”

Searching for any virtual console game will bring it up in the eShop, so let us know how you’re liking those new games! For European users, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow for your update, which includes:

Donkey Kong Jr.

Excitebike

Ice Climbers

Punch Out

F-Zero

Super Mario World

However, European consumers will be missing out on Kirby’s Adventure and Balloon Fight from the line-up that North America is getting. This is likely due to 50Hz versions being released and getting lots of negative feedback from customers. Instead, Europeans will get Mario’s Super Picross.
During the event, Nintendo Satoru Iwata explained "Unlike previous years, we will not have a large-scale [E3] presentation directed to everyone in the world. Instead, we are planning several smaller events focusing on software for America. Among
these hands-on events will be one for American distributors and another for western media."
During E3 2012 Nintendo held other meetings as well as their large presentation. This year, the company is striving to
be different and announce all of their new software through the smaller events.
Temporary outage to strengthen stability planned

Nintendo Wii U owners will experience a period of planned downtime tomorrow while the publisher readies the console for a major update.

From 6am Australian Eastern Standard Time to midday (AEST) on April 23, 2013, Nintendo will be conducting maintenance on their servers which will affect all stores in the Nintendo family of video game consoles.
Services affected are;

Nintendo Wii U eShop

Nintendo Wii Shopping Channel

Nintendo 3DS eShop

Nintendo DSi Shop

Nintendo will then presumably release the Wii U Update which is a major overhaul of some system processes, and adds new features to the console.

One new feature is the Virtual Console service which allows players to purchase and download video game titles from past consoles, including Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System and others. This is similar to the system that debuted on Wii, however it allows players to save their game at any time.

Nintendo are also promising an speed-up of load times when switching between a game and the Home Menu to access services such as Miiverse and the eShop. It will also be quicker to close software once the user is finished. A second update launching later this year will speed up the load times of booting up software. That is due to hit Australian consoles in the Spring.

Other features include automatic installation of game software once downloaded, as well as the ability for the Wii U console to download and install titles even when the system is turned off.
