    mame wii

    hi please, before you post. "use search" or "google" i have done both. i found numerous guide to mame for wii. but what i find strange is that they are all really outdated. from video that i see the mame file structure looks nothing like the one in tutorials. infact there many folder not used in the current mame and files that are supposed to be in root are not there. i try putting a rom folder where the guides say to put them at. i even tried to put the rom where the Rom folder that came with this mame. and every time i run mame i get the error cant find rom. And no i am not unzipping them i left it in its zip file.

    Does anybody have a updated tutorial on how to load the roms into mame or even get mame to work ?
    i have sdlmame wii-v0.5

    thank you.

    The reason all of them are out dated is because mame never really worked well on the wii. It would have long load times and most games were choppy. If you find anything otherwise feel free to bring it up here. I searched for it a while back and couldn't find anything that sounded worth messing with.

    I got you guys on this one. Mame runs awesome on the wii. I haven't noticed any choppiness yet even in games that like to load the screen with tons of sprites but that's not to say it isn't possible. I think the longest load time I might have is on some of my larger games like 5-10 seconds at most. Compatibility is a bit of an issue given the limitations of the wii but you can run most non-problematic arcade games up until the mid 90's. The current version is 0.5 and you can download it from the Google Code site Downloads - sdl-mame-wii - Project Hosting on Google Code. Mame is supposed to be USB compatible but I've only been able to get it running properly on an SD or SDHC card. On my current set-up it is running on a 4GB micro SDHC W/ adapter. My only problem with mame on the wii is there is a 150 game limitation. Also remember to keep your roms zipped. My file Structure is as follows:
    ->apps
    ->sdlmame-wii
    ->docs
    ->config
    ->license
    ->mame
    ->newvideo
    ->windows
    ->boot.dol
    ->icon
    ->meta
    ->README
    ->mame
    ->cfg
    ->Your game configs will save here
    ->nvram
    ->Your game nvram will save here
    ->roms
    ->Place you roms here
    ->errors
    ->mame
    ->ui.bdc
    ->ui.bdf

    It's been a while since I've gave it a go. Maybe I'll give it another shot. There are some weird games games for arcade that drop your jaw.

    I like it because I can play the arcade perfect Moonwalker in all of it's glory! lol It's worth a try. I had a horrible time with getting it to run in some of the previous revs but it seems way more stable now with better game support in every rev. Now I wish they would ditch the 150 game limit......It sucks!

    Is your file structure above showing from the root onward? Meaning the only folders on the ROOT will be Mame and Apps...or am I reading it wrong? I might give this another go as well. Do you know if any DK games are supported?
    Damn I suck!!!!

    You are 100% correct sir. That would be file structure from the root saying I only had MAME. Of course my actual file structure on the card isn't so neat and tidy with as many apps and files as I have it. I should also probably mention for people worried about about screwing up the file structure or having the most recent version....You could always cheat and download the homebrew browser. From it you could download the latest stable rev of the emulator and it will automatically create the files on your SD. Minus the roms and files that appear the first time MAME runs or the first time you run a game of course.

    As far as DK. Donkey Kong 3 and DK Jr. run flawlessly. Most of the old arcade games that I and probably yourself (I'm 33) grew up on run with little or no problem. A limited few classic games run with slight graphic / audio flaws. One of the great things about MAME is the program will tell you if it can run a ROM and what problems it has. If the game is 100% non-supported it won't show up in the ROM selection screen. If the game is supported at ROM selection screen where it displays the title the box will be green for 100% supported, yellow for mostly supported with limited audio / video problems, or red for supported but has lots of problems. It also tells you under the title where the problem lies, whether its audio or video.

    All this talk of MAME is making me want to play Pengo. lol

    OT Me too. lol Sadly its just not the same though. I almost bought a Moonwalker cabinet. When I bought my arcade cabinet years back I narrowed it down to three...Moonwalker, SSF2, or a two slot NeoGeo. I decided the Neo would be the wise choice so I bought a halfass bar cabinet conversion and went overboard.
