    have a good day....
so does this mean that if i took my games plus programs needed to my friends house who has an lg i would be able to make the backups, then later if i needed a backup of the backup i could just use my dvd drive (which is a toshiba) to make a straight copy in imgburn? or would i need the lg drive to make a copy of my copy? and if i already have the iso of the game i want do i need the lg drive to burn? (sorry for the newb q's...just a little confused by what you meant and really want to copy my zelda disc...young kids and discs do not go well together lol)

As I understand it, you don't need a special drive to burn Wii ISOs, but you do need one to recognize/read a Wii disk & create ISOs. I use an HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B and have had no problems.

I did a lot of research & pulling together of information and programs to soft mod my Wii & found the following info:

"only a DVD drive model # 8161B, 8162B, 8183B, or 8164B made by LG Electronics, Hewlett Packard (HP), Hitachi, H-L Data Storage, Compaq, Sony, IBM, Teac, Gateway or Goldstar (all IDE); or the Hitachi, LG, or H-L Data Storage GDR-H10NBLK (SATA)" will recognize & read a Wii disk.

    Hope this helps!

i dont really think it matters what type of burner just that its fully functional and can do 4x speed which is the best for burning back ups for your wii the discs you burn with dont matter either just that they are dvd - thats all

    Topic says burning, not reading/dumping.

burning a game you can use any burner, as long as it's capable of burning a quality image ( get good media ).

reading an original game/dumping image to Hard drive = a few LG drives, maybe a couple rebadged HP/Hitachi drives that are actually LG.

    Thanks for the info
I've never tried to backup from original DVD game.
Just download iso game and burn on old sonny DVD burner with nero 'burn image' options.
it works. I burned with max speed allowed.

Use a LG-8164b or LG-8163b or LG-8162b or LG-8161b dvd drive. It might even work with other hitachi drives with GDR in their name

Lg drives are by far the most superior drives for reading and writing any type of media. Best to stick with what is proven to work.
