Post Guide: Creating & Recording .ISO files

There are many other ways to get the job done, but this is a proven method utilizing freeware. This guide will work for both GameCube and Wii titles.

PART 1 - HARDWARE:

You need one of 5 LG 5.25 DVD-Roms:
LG GDR-8161b
LG GDR-8162b
LG GDR-8163b
LG GDR-8164b
LG GDR-8082N *NEW* - Notebook drive, more info [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]

Notes:
- There may be other LG Notebook DVD-Roms that will get the job done. Due to the obscurity and difficulty to obtain, just stick with the drives mentioned above.
- Also, yes you can WiFi dump a game, but this is not the place to discuss it. I've never done it, I don't intend to ever do it.

PART 2 - READING / DUMPING A DISC:

Program:
RawDump 2.1 - [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]

Requirements:
.Net Framework 2.0 or higher. 2.0 was released in 2005, so it's pretty standard on XP SP2, XP SP3, and Vista. There's no need to really install this unless you notice you have problems first.

If you're still running Windows ME, 98, or 2000, .Net Framework 2.0 is as high as you can go.

Directions:

XP -
start program
open disc tray
insert disc
close tray
click "start dump"

Vista -
open disc tray
start program
insert disc
close tray
click "start dump"

The trick to Vista is to open the disc drive first before starting the program. I don't know why, but on some systems,

the program will crash otherwise.

Notes:
- In 2 to 3 hours, you'll have a game image, or .ISO.
- When the dump is complete, right click on the file and go to properties. Make sure the image is exactly 4,699,979,776 kbs. If it's not, it's a bad read, re-dump it.
- Super Smash Bros is a dual layer disc, so it will be larger than the kb stated above. Click the dual layer checkbox and execute the steps above.

Images:

Start the program by double clicking the icon.

The application will open.

When a game disc is inserted, it will be detected.

The game dumping has started.

The .ISO will output to where ever the RawDump.exe is located.

Errors:
In the event you receive this -

1. If on XP, try the Vista method.
2. Try this on a different system.
3. Is a game inserted?
4. Did you get your drive off of eBay? It could be dead-on-arrival.
5. Install the newest .Net Framework

PART 3 - RECORDING:

Program:
ImgBurn - [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]

1. Open the program and select "write image file to disc"

2. Select your file

3. Browse to the .ISO when the window pops

4. Set your record speed and insert a blank DVD-R

5. Hit the file to disc button.

*** for Super Smash Brothers: Brawl only - set the layer break before recording ***

Notes:
- Record at the lowest speed possible. By putting the speed to 1X, it'll default to the slowest the disc and recorder match to.
- No DVD+R discs. The booktype doesn't work well. Use quality DVD-R's only. (Verbatim works the best for me.) Also, no debates on DVD-R brands please. Any posts arguing Verbatim vs (insert brand here) will get deleted.

If this guide helped you, please use the button on the thread. It'll encourage me to make more of these if enough feedback is given.

Can anyone recommend a slim DVD drive? I have a laptop and compact Desktop, no room for the big boys.

I'm waiting for the last of my parts to come in. I think there are 4 notebook drives that will work, but I'm not going to say exactly which ones till I confirm they're good.

Give me about 5 more days.

Is that because you find it simpler to do it this way, and don't want to explain wifi dumping? Or because Wifi dumping from the Wii can hurt the Wii's drive?
(I'm not looking for an explanation on wifi dumping, I've already done it once before and just want to make sure that I'm not making a mistake in doing so.)

Also you said No DVD+R discs. So far I've burned 2 games using DVD+R (office Depot brand) and although I haven't played all them all the way through yet, I have no problems so far. Should I re-burn them using DVD-R? will playing through with the +R discs hurt anything, or is it just that usually the +R's typically don't work at all and that's why you say to use -R?

I see WiFi dumping as a complete strain on the system. I'm not going to work my disc drive for 3+ hours constantly when a DVD drive can do it for me. Even when you play games the disc isn't spinning and laser reading for 3 hours. It's caching data along the way.

It's much easier / cheaper to get the LG DVD-Rom than replace a Wii drive.

Sick around long enough and you'll see the numerous DVD+R disc failures. DVD-R is the accepted media type for the system.

If it works for you, great. If your game doesn't load when others do, you know what to blame first.
