so is it recommended to use the LG drive, or would any other burner work?

It seems only a few LG Drives will read the disc. Other drives aren't able to do that.

Does NERO works fine as well?
Or do you prefer ImgBurn?

Though Nero works, I'd recommend ImgBurn, i've used it for a while with no problems what so ever.

Just to clarify for anyone who has questions about using different brands of DVD r's. I personally have tried using Sony DVD+R media, Memorex DVD+RW media, and Sony DVD-R media. All of these have resulted in my backups not being recognized.
I went out and bought myself some Verbatim DVD-R media. And hopefully, they will work. If they do, I will certainly post that here. ^^; Good-luck to everyone trying to burn backups!

just found a GDR-8163B in a pile of optical drives i had lying about, glad i didnt spend £30 on ebay now.

just installed my new 8163B, started dumping my first game (Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip) and have already run into a problem:
RawDump (2.1) seems to be reading the disc at speeds MUCH slower than the screens posted in the opener. currently it is at 23 MB/hour, but it fluctuates to as much as 250MB/hour!!
do i need to install a special driver or something to get those kind of speeds? i've perused the thread for anyone having this problem but ran into nothing. anyone got any suggestions?
ps. I just noticed the dump never made it past 20MB both times I tried...anything to that?
UPDATE: says it will take another 6619 hours to complete....i like the game, just not sure I have that kind of patience, so help would be greatly appreciated

there is no drivers you need to install, the generic windows ones should be fine.

well from what i've read, dumping from the wii puts a lot of strain onto it and i got it secondhand so i have little idea of how much longer it might last for so i'm gonna save that as my last resort
