does it has to be an LG 816xb dvd drive

Does it has to be an LG 8161, 8162, 8163, or 8164 dvd drive in order to backup the wii games? Can other LG drives able to read the ISO file? Any information is greatly appreciated.

Yes you need one of those LG drives to be able to rip Wii Discs, ther is one other LG latop slim drive as well. You also have option of using USB Gecko device or if you have homebrew installed then then using DVD Dumper 1.2 to transfer iso image via network/wifi to your PC.

but using the wii to dump your games after a while it kills the wii drive.

I bought two LG drives on Ebay...paid 65.00 total for the two drives...let me tell you what, they work great, but when dumping the wii games prepare yourself to wait 1:50 min to dump a wii game. Some games take over two hours. Seems the average is 1:50 min and then i use WiiU1.1 to check the ISO to make sure its good correct size. Good luck and happy hunting!

Okay, so dumping from Wii to ISO = Bad idea?

My Wii can dump games that my LG8163b can't. Why would this be?

Seems that my LG8163b is very picky !
Will get a portion of the way through a dump and freeze up.

Weak laser? Can it be tweaked up like the Wii lasers?

Rawdump2.1 was my first 2 tries. Then 2 or 3 tries with friidump, finally dumped using the Wii.

Like I said....It's almost like my LG8163 didn't like it. Then I tried dumpping Super Mario Galaxy with rawdump on my LG..no go.

Other games have dumped on that drive though ???

hmmmmm....it seems that your drive don't like the game it ripping cause I have the same drive just like yours and she rips that game without a fuss.
