the pointer dont work, but i can use the d pad on the remote, but if i press home on mote pointer works fine

Brawl does not have a pointer, it uses the wiimote in standalone mode as an NES style (sideways) controller. If you use wiimote+nunchuck the stick is used on the nunchuck.
Yep, I have a retail SSBB and there's no pointer. You just have to use those thumbs attached to your hands!
