Media: DVD-R for backups, not DVD+R.

FYI ...
Due to uncertain / unconfirmed factors, the Wii will read DVD-R media better than DVD+R. Please use DVD–R media when recording discs intended for the console.


My personal theory …
The Wii’s DVD-Rom has drive chips on it labeled “Panasonic”. Also, the only brand of PC drive to read a Wii disc is made by LG. I believe that the Wii DVD drive is manufactured by Nintendo using a combination of LG and Panasonic parts.

In 1995, Panasonic, LG, and other major electronics corporations founded The DVD Forum. The DVD Forum is an international organization composed of hardware, software, media and content companies that use and develop the DVD and HD DVD formats. Most importantly, the DVD Forum created the DVD-R and its standards.

In 1997, Sony and other corporations founded the DVD+RW Alliance. In 2003, Microsoft officially backed the DVD+R format.

When a retail game is created, it’s factory pressed, therefore neither –R or +R in nature. It would only make sense that the hardware behind the Wii, LG / Panasonic with 14 years of DVD-R experience, would recognize the –R standard better due to its association / history / founding of the format.

After spending much time on WiiHacks.com, I’ve come to witness many issues being resolved by DVD-R media. The other staff can vouch for this statement also. To minimize errors, please use the –R media when recording discs intended for the Wii.

you should probably state the best brands of dvd-r that most people have success with to try 1st before trying other brands :)

Verbatim discs tend to be the best. The combination of the Azo dye compound + top layer materials reduces oxidation and increases reflectivity.

A poor disc will start to "bald" after a couple of years. Air can eat through the dye / plastic and seperate the reflective surface from the disc.

heres the deal, anything will work more or less, doessnt mean everything is the same =\, just give E3, some respect and not waste time talking here, a lot of topics are solved by just using -R

When you state 'the Wii will read DVD-R media better than DVD+R' i presume some wii have read DVD+R without any trouble (becasue I have stacks of these :->)? also do I need to use D/L for all games, some games or never?

DVD+R is a random bag. People will try them, claim they work, only to post and say that their system stopped reading the disc.

DVD-R just works better.

For the record ... Last night I burnt my first backups on a cheap 'Dysan' make (who ever they are!) dvd-r disks and they worked first time. I also forgot to lower the burn speed so they burnt and the max speed, which in theory was about 5-6x and they still worked :-) (btw the titles of the backups were Wii Music and Disney Think Fast).

I read that it is better to use Verbatim dvd-r disks because the dye is better which means the lazer doesn't have to work as hard. I have some of these on order which i will now use all the time in the future.

Is there a list available of what backups need dual layer and what ones need only single layer? I know backups like SSBB is a dual layer ... or can I just tell by the size of the iso?

Wii .iso files are all exactly 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes).
- If they're under, they've been "scrubbed". (had dummy, filler, blocks removed)
- If you ripped it yourself and it's under / over, redump.

The only 2 DL games I know of are:
- SSBB
- Brothers in Arms

since everyone recommends verbs im just wondering if these will do the trick....theyre crazy cheap compared to other verbs so im thrown...but im thinkin its because of the white top:
