My experience with DVD-R using a Memorex 530L burner with Imgburn at 2x to use in Gamma 0.3 each tested with 3 titles & same iso: Mario Galaxy, Zelda Twilight, No more Heroes.
-Memorex DVD-R: Wii makes loud noises and can't even start the discs. Errors even on the channel screen.
-Verbatims DVD-R from taiwan: All games work but they launch slowly, sometimes giving error but I eject and reinsert and they launch fine afterward. Less loud noises, but the videos are very sluggish and end up crashing the Wii except in No more heroes. The video quality is like original.
-Fujifilm DVD-R: I underestimated them...Load fast, no noises, no errors, no sluggish videos . The only problem is minor sluggish audio in some charged video scenes like the attack of Bowser in Galaxy and the video quality is less than the Verbatims & originals. (strange?)
Maby I'm insane but I really saw a difference in video quality between both and I think this is why it worked so well as if the videos are less heavy to load.
People have been hating on the memorex, and for my first batch of backups, 8 to be exact, and had only ONE error, and taht was because I moved my laptop around (in a violent motion).
Everyone says memorex doesn't work, but I use memorex on my mac laptop with the standard burn program that comes on macs, and every disc works and loads perfectly.
I dont think if the question is that what disc works or not. Lots of types works perfectly but the question is which one is the best for the laser in the long run. I used Maxwell for my backups and now none of my backups works.

If what I am reading is true then it will be the Wii laser that will fail due to it having to work harder to read the discs ... it is said that Verbatim-R are the best for the Wii laser. Based in this info I use them.

The only way to judge that is by hearing how stressed the drive is.
Loud noises + stuttering + video lag + crash = bad for laser = change brand
Also your dvd burner may act different with certain dvd brand. In the end try to use what work best for you. Try to buy 1 dvd from many brand and burn the same game on it and test each to see which create less problems...before buying in bulks.

The Best Verbatims
The Best Verbatims are actually by Taiyo Yuden made in Japan then in singapore and at a distant 3rd from tiawan
I burned Call of Duty 5 and play it a lot and it was very noisy. Dont know if this happens to any disc out there. Or even the original if someone has that info. That always bothered me.
I have a bunch of discs that are quite noisy as well, memorex (as stated above). But once I leave school (its in the middle of the sticks) to go back home I will pick up some nice quality dvd-rs.
