Thread: Media: DVD-R for backups, not DVD+R.

only dvds my dad had int he house were TDK +R, and i didnt want to wait for tommorow to go to store so i burned an iso that i acquired of mario party 8, used imgbrn at 2x and put it into my wii and it played the game just fine,,,will post later when i try to burn more games using those TDK +R dvds

i have a problem: (what is better sony or verbatim (i had also used tdk, and works well but only with tales onf symphonia at 2x speed):
i have my pal wii (v4.1E), i have the homebrew channel, ios 249 rev.14, ios 36, trucha bug....etc, backup gamma launcher (wiigator) and neogamma launcher (R6 & R7). my problem is that, im trying tu burn red steel, and no launcher reads it, or it does read it, but only on the disc channel, but when i launch the game it comes a message saying "Error eject the disc, turn off your wii and see the manual"
i used active@ iso burner, imgburn (both at 2x; 4X and then reading in other sites, they say to burn at 1x (even if it doesnt burn at that speed it depends on the burner that u are using), i have used TDK and verbatim ( now i'll try with sony discs)..........so what should i do, maybe is the game that doesnt work (but it s weird, because i burnt tales of symphonia (ntsc) while my wii is pal, and it worked with TDK and burnt at 2x using active@ iso burner....
then what speed shoul i use.....many people, as a matter of fact, often sy contradictory things:
some use 1x, some others 2x, some 4x, and thers even some people that say that 16x worked eccellent...........
so what do you think?
is relly verbatim the best for the wii (i've also read about using ritek and ridis, but i dont even know where to find them, i have sony, verbatim and tdk discs..............so what is the perfect speed? which one should i use...................and if i use the usb loader will this give a solution to my problems?

ah i forgot to say, that tales of symphonia, doesnt work when i reboot my wii with hooks (in order to launch the game from the disc channel), but it does work lauching it directly frome the gamma or neogamma launcher in the homebrew channel.............................instead, red steel dosnt work directly from the launcher (it comes only a title on the bottom of the screen saying "licensed by nintendo" and then it blocks (even my wiimote controller turns off).......while using the hooks (rebooting my wii with hooks) the game becomes visible in the disc channel but when launched, it comes out thhe error message................so please help me , give me some advice on what should i do......................thank you a lot......................

DVD+R are fine. If not better. They run faster, burn better and last longer compared to DVD-R.

95% of my burns have been with Verb DVD+R and have never had any disc related issues. The other 5% which are DVD-R are constant headaches. Only 3 out of 4 would discs will work the first time burnt.

I'll be sticking with DVD+R no matter what anyone else says. The proof is in the pudding, and its some damn good pudding too.

I used DVD+R for awhile and I could hear the wii trying to read the discs. it was loud so i switched to -R. Verbatims are the best, I bought Taiyo Yudens and they wouldnt even read at all.

Of course now my wii can hardly read retail games :/ Mod chipped + burned discs sucks compared to USB hard drive and loader. im glad i switched to the hard drive solution.

I hope to be going that way soon myself. I had a 500gb external I was using as a pvr with my satellite box but my baby son yanked it off the desk and now it won't read. 500gb of backups would of been nice. Oh well.I just need to get another HDD for the case.

Just finished burning a backup of twilight princess using new Memorex DVD R discs. They are neither -R or +R, they are just R. Burnt @ 16x with a cheapo Lite on burner from WalMart. Works fine with NeoGamma R7 using IOS249 rev 14
Wii firmware @ 4.1U Also used TDK DVD-R burnt @ 4x, which seems to run a bit faster, and smoother.

Both also come up in the disc channel, but cause a system error when trying to play from there.

WHat kind of system error? Is is giving you the error for any game you burn or only for certain games?

It's just the typical " An error has occurred. Press the eject button... Read the Wii manual...Blah, blah blah. It doesn't really matter to me as long as I can play with the backup launcher. Original, factory games play fine in the disc channel, just not backups.

I only posted this to inform others of the type of media I used, and with what setup I have.
