What is R4 for Nintendo DSi XL?

My son (aged 9) is wanting to get a R4 cartridge for his DSiXL. I have looked online and am confused as to what it is exactly. He seems to think it comes with preloaded games (as one of his mates has one) and lots of storage. Can anyone explain to an old man (me) exactly what this is used for and what the advantages are versus the individual cartridges?

Many thanks in advance and apologies for my massive NOOB-ness.

hi the r4 card is an adapter that uses a micro sdcard that slots in to the back of the ds you download games (roms) on to your pc then drag and drop them on to the microsd card .they don't normally come with games on but some people sell them with games aready installed .if its for the dsi you need a r4i cart apposed to an r4.the advantage is you can get about 30 roms on a micro sd so your not carrying loads of carts around needless to say the amount ov money you'll save plus you can keep updatin it to the latest games ..if your kids are like mine thats every couple of weeks....hope that helps..good luck

Where exactly does the money saving part come into play?
You buy a game, you get the rom and copy it to the R4i card (that you also paid for).

Yeah, it saves room with cardridges but not money.

If you meant piracy (downloading the roms illegally without owning the game in the first place), that's illegal and discussing piracy is not allowed on these forums.
Buying a R4i card with games preloaded does not make you the owner of the games (unless you also get original cards with these games on it) and is still piracy.

@ Paracelcus, take ganoderma's advice. Also, buying a card with "preloaded" copyrighted games is illegal for both you, and the person you buy it from.

@ Old Muller -- I suggest you take a look at the Forum Rules

A better alternative to the R4i is the M3i zero. It does similar things to the R4i but it has updateable firmware.
This means that if Nintendo ever release an update for the DSi it could block the R4i from working, whereas the M3i zero could be reenabled simply by plugging it into a computer with the new file on the SD card.
But as previously stated, software piracy is not to be condoned so only copy on roms of games that you legally own.....
However, as well as play backed up games, these cards (notably the M3i zero) can run homebrew software to do things such as use action replay cheats on your games, or run media such as music or video upon your DS

Huh, isn't there a section for DS and DSI, as well as a sister forum for this stuff?

After today's release of DSi firmware 1.41 you might want to hold off on getting an R4i. There is a chance that this card is NOT compatible with the new firmware released. Wait to see what people say about which cards are being blocked or get an upgradeable card.
