DS is easy, very easy to hack. You will have to purchase a slot 1 microsd adapter though. That also implies that you need a microsd card. Bricking is basically impossible, unless you use a program like flashme, but I'm pretty sure you need to take apart the ds in order to install that. Just google NDS homebrew, or go here for more info. That is what I did about a year ago, and everything has basically been fine since.

I just realized that you said DSL, and not DSi, but the info should be out there.

I use an M3DSReal. R4's are popular as they're the cheapest, but I know the R4 originally didn't support sdhc (it may have changed recently). The mods here will recommend an Acekard.

I chose the M3 as it supports sdhc and it loads a software called M3Sakura . This allows all media playback w/o any extra homebrew while still being able to boot games from the same place. Though the other cards may have something similar, to my knowledge they all need a hombrew app called moonshell to play media. I would also look into an adapter called IPlayer. Its rather new, but it allows GBA rom emulation from the slot-1 adapter, where no other adapter can.

The games are pretty small, ranging from 8 MB to 128 MB, so you can fit a lot on a little sd card. If you want other homebrew, including movies and songs, I would get a bigger sd card. I use an 8GB sdhc, and currently have about 90 games, 1 movie, and a few songs on it using only 3.21 GB.

its all cool, we all have to start somewhere, and I have nothing better to do.

sdhc is sd high capacity. It allows more storage space, but sacrifices compatibility with older machines. Regular sd cannot hold more than 2GB of info. Therefore, if you purchase an micro sdhc card, make sure you buy and adapter that supports it, like the M3.

Emulation is how a system, say your computer, can play NES games. This means that your computer is powerful enough to virtually mimic what the hardware of the original NES did. Roms are the virtual form of a game. Thus emulating a rom, means playing a game from another system on your computer.

The Iplayer adapter has an extra 16MB of RAM (Random Access Memory) that is meant to emulate the GBA console.

it seems that here is recommended by trusted sources. I used DealExtreme, but it appears that site no longer sells them. You should google search though. I paid $7 for my nephew's R4, and $12 for my M3, but now it appears they are going for $35!!!! Crazy! As for trusted sources, all the adapters come from China anyway, so the chances of getting screwed over are pretty minimal. Now that I think about it, ebay may even have some for cheap. Just shop around.

For sd cards, just use amazon or best buy. They are quality cards for pretty cheap. You can get a 2GB sd card for about $10. You may also want to look into an sd card reader for your computer if you don't already have one. The ones that come with the adapters are crappy and will melt/ruin you sd card.

check out this site. It seems to be a little out of date with links, but I think that it will help you understand what is going on. I'm trying to remember back to when I set up my nephew's R4. I'm pretty sure the only folders that need to remain as you have downloaded them are the 4 firmware folders. Other than that, just organize as you see fit.

If the game didn't pass the start screen, it most likely means that it is a newer game and you firmware is out of date. Search for R41 firmware downloads.

    For games, check this thread.
