It's a very simple process. All you would need is to buy a NDS Flashcart. Some are better than others. For the DS Lite/DS I would reccomend purchasing a CycloDS or an Acekard 2.

You would also need to purchase a Micro SD Card to place the cart firmware and roms on.
Flashcarts can be purchased on many mod sites, and there are DSi compatible flashcarts if you choose to get one of those for your daughter instead.

The only thing that will get flashed or upgraded is the flashcart and maybe install new firmware on your microSD card when needed to get the newer games working.

    1. DSi - flashcart gets flashed or upgraded and new firmware on the microSD.
    2. DS lite - just have to update the firmware on the MicroSD.

No DSL/I carts need to be flashed. All you have to do is click and drag the firmware over to the micro sd card and then insert it into the flashcart. No flashing required.

so from the "kid" perspective, what is the easiest way to go ? I have two kids that naturally find the sharing thing a challenge and only want to play the same game that the other one is playing. Instead of spending the money on buying duplicate games, I would like to just be able to buy a cart and do it that way. I want to make sure that I buy the most kid friendly cart I can get, menu wise and the like.

I thought the M3i Zero has a USB wire that flashes the cart straight from computer. I know my AceKard 2i had the 1.4 installed all ready when I bought it.
