I noticed it has added a "save data backup feature" but this feature is, to say the least, useless. You cannot backup data from game carts, only from installed games such as Virtual Console titles. But these games already save to the SD card and neither these nor the native saves can be used on VBAGX or anything else due to there encryption. So what purpose exactly does this feature serve? What point is it to make a copy of the same file on the SD card when you can just as easy copy the original file to a PC? It makes no sense to me...your SD card corrupts that "backup" will be in the same place as the original....GONE.

I could be wrong, but I think this feature is supposed to allow you to use your saves from your digital games on a cart. Still seems kind of pointless to me though, but it could be for getting the save from a game demo you try on to a cart if yo end up buying the actual game.

    Nevermind

The feature is intended for people who have too many games to fit on the SD card. It allows you to delete the game (to create free memory) with out deleting your save data. Apparently before deleting the game erased your save as well.

This is more than the Wii U currently allows. No way to back up your saves still on Wii U.

You can slap in a second USB drive and then copy the game data (game contents and saves) from one USB drive to the other.

Well that would only work for downloaded games on the hard drive right? Also to have a backup I would have to dedicate two external hard drives for Wii U only usage. Doesn't seem like much help, I don't even use one hard drive currently.

Edit: Never mind, another case of misreading.

I'm guessing you could also do this with game save data on games that are played off of disk. I've never tried it though. I know I can copy data to and from system memory and my hard drive, I imagine copying between two hard drives would be similar.

Interesting. When this feature was announced I emailed nintendo and asked them if I could use it to backup save data and they told me no.

They may have thought you were asking in terms of how the Wii did it, with SD cards, which cannot be done.

I wonder what the odds are we'll one day be able to import saves we rip from our cartridges using this?

There already is a process to rip the save from the cart (deleting the save on the cart) to save on the system so those who choose to digitally buy the game after playing the cart can do so and not lose progress. I'm not sure how that process works, though. I've never tried it.
