Oh right. All it says on the blurb is "Fully configurable update blocker". Are internet updates avoidable, or do you have to update before it'll let you play a game/do anything? Do you lose any functionality if you refuse to update (like on the PS3)?
As I've said, I don't have a controller, so I cannot check anything on the console as yet, so I don't know what version it's updated to. I doubt it'll be 4.2, because it's sat in my friend's loft for a long time.
I suppose I'll have to go softmod, because although it seems a lot of pissing around at first, it gives a lot more freedom after it's set up.
What is it like maintaining a softmod? Do you have to keep up-to-date with it, or do you keep using the same version until a game won't work, and then chose to update? How often to updates come out?

Sorry to keep bothering you, but I really want to know what I'm getting myself into

Keep using the same version until a game won't work, then find out what it needs and update only that. Not System Menu.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.

Ok thanks. I have a spare Micro SD with an SD adaptor that I can use to softmod. I just need to wait for the controller. Speaking of which, I got this private message from someone called "Big Rabbit":

no controllers???Don't think that's distubing? It sounds like you have serious issues.
No idea what they are on about!

I've no idea either. An attempt at humour perhaps?

I posted this elsewhere but thought I'd repost it here

I have read elsewhere on this forum that you can 'swap' the update on an ISO file using a program on the PC. If I got a backup of a game (say Monster Hunter Tri - it's the reason I got a Wii ), could I swap the update on the ISO (which I assume would be 4.2) with the 4.1 update, then let it run, thus updating the Wii to the latest 'safe' version, and from then on block all future updates (using Drivekey and BrickBlocker)? Would this save me from having to bugger about with softmodding? I know it wouldn't save me if my Wii bricks (which softmodding would, assuming I used the unbricker), but I just want to know my options.

Also, does not updating hamper my online play? Can I still play with others online no matter what version my Wii is? Do they have to have the same version as me to play online? This applies to both the firmware and game version.

MH3 already has 4.1 as it's update. Afaik only Endless Ocean 2 and Fifa World Cup South Africa have 4.2 updates (although my library is very limited as I don't actually play Wii very much) http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...s-use-run.html

So I *could* do as I suggested then? Use a backup of MH3 o update my Wii to 4.1, then use the Drivekey and the Brickblocker application to stop any future updates?
Will that stop me playing with people who have the 4.2 update (or later, once they are released)?

Games run under Game IOS and not System Menu or System IOS. People are running 3.2 and playing games with those that are on 4.2 all the time.

Great! Once again you have put my fears to rest!
Now all I need is the Drivekey, screwdriver, and a controller, and I can start hardmodding my Wii
