    Faulty DriveKey?

    Hello,

I ordered my DriveKey last month and got it a couple of days ago. It's said to be v2 and able to play backup NSMB fine. I followed online guides to install the DriveKey and the result is... baffling. The success rate of playing backup discs is like 40% if not lower. I'm wondering if anybody can identify whether the chip is faulty or a problem with installation...

I have a Japanese Wii, firmware 3.3J updated to 4.1J with HBC. I also have NeoGamma installed (out of desperation lol).

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (backup):
DriveKey - not working; NeoGamma - working

    Super Mario Galaxy (backup):
DriveKey - not working; NeoGamma - not working; USB loader GX - not working

    New Super Mario Bros (backup):
DriveKey - not working; NeoGamma - working

    Zelda Twilight Princess (backup):
DriveKey - working; NeoGamma - working

    MarioKart Wii (Original, J):
    DriveKey - working

    Resident Evil 4 (backup):
    DriveKey - working

There are some more tests I did, and I can post them if it helps, but basically the result is confusing. I'm not too sure if DriveKey is faulty or the installation is bad, 'cause it does work for some backup discs. On the other hand, some backup discs work with NeoGamma but NOT DriveKey. I personally assume that those work with NeoGamma should work on DriveKey as well (ruling out problems with the backup process).

BTW I had the DriveKey Dipswitch set to Japan, and I config the DriveKey to block All updates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

[edited: Originally mixed up DVDx with NeoGamma; this has been corrected.]

What are the regions of the games your playing and have you made sure there isnt too much pressure on the modchip?

Thanks for the reply. Everything's the USA one, thus I can't play any on my Japanese Wii even with originals.

By too much pressure... you mean too much pressure physically? Are you suggesting that I should put some padding underneath the DVD so it doesn't press on the DriveKey too much?

What type of media are you using and how are you burning the games? There could be several reasons for your problem. DVDx just allows the wii to read DVDs for playing movies and games on a softmoded console. Seeing how you have a modchip installed, it would be using the modchip not the DVDx. I've had only a handful of games that wouldn't load using the wiikey2 but will work in neogamma r7.
Come to the Irc room to get help or just have fun

Motivation alone is not enough. If you have an idiot and you motivate him, now you have a motivated idiot.

Ah just realized I used the wrong term up there. It's through NeoGamma (R8 I think, gotta double check) that I played those games unable to run directly. Got it mixed up with DVDx I think.

I'm using Taiyo Yuden TYG02 DVD-Rs burning at 2x (doesn't allow me to go down to 1x for some reasons), using ImgBurn at first (Book type set to DVD-ROM for DVD+R, not sure if that matters), and later Macbook's Disk Utility.

When I say too much pressure I mean when you installed it you may have tightened the screws too much and its probably applying too much pressure to the chip and causing it to play up.

Interesting suggestion. I'll open it up tonight and check.

    1. Yes. And I went in to set to block ALL updates (default is Import... but that gets a bit confusing since my console is Japanese... so I set it to all).
    2. Yes. Resident Evil 4 and Twilight Princess works directly and both were backups.

Basically, there are some that neither DriveKey works nor NeoGamma, which I suspect it's the burning process going wrong.
There are some that can be played through DriveKey (directly), and I believe they work on NeoGamma.
The problem comes when some title runs on NeoGamma but NOT DriveKey (NSMB and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10), leading me to think there's something wrong with my DriveKey since I think NeoGamma playing them fine indicates the backup disc is fine.

the fact that you can play some backups from the dvd drive AND can get into the config menus..shows that the drivekey is working as it should

your problem will lie in your wii software or your dvd burned games... more than likely dvd burned games
