newbie making a title for this thread help

I have been reading but i just seem to be getting more and more confused.

To bring you guys up to date on my situation. I have an older wii, its probably 3 years old now. I just got the new super Mario brothers for Christmas. In the last couple weeks i discovered the whole wii hacking trend, i started researching the softmods but got overwhelmed and just decided to order a drivekey. So my drivekey should be here towards the end of the week.

So i keep reading threads, but they all talk about the nsmb and 4.2 but i can't find an good explanation. nsmb updates to 4.2 and 4.2 will only let me play ntsc games and not pal games?

i just want to know if im going to be able to play backups (and originals for that matter)

    thanks -JImmy

i just read that entire 4.2 sticky thread. I missed it before posting

I thought nsmb had 4.2, so if i it has 4.1, i should be able to play everything (pal and ntsc) then?

where does 4.2 come from then?

Yes as long as you dont update to 4.2

4.2 is what your wii is updated to if you update through the internet. Also the new Endless ocean has 4.2 update on it.

doesn't matter to me that much, ive tried getting all ntsc games anyway, only a handful ive downloaded were pal

although i could only find sims animals africa in pal, and that is the ONLY game my wife requested

Im not familiar with hardmods but I think you can configure them to block updates. Also many people that have hardmods, softmod as well so they can install priiloader(which also blocks updates) Do some reading around the forum and im sure you will find more info.

its all just very overwhelming at first. And i would never here the end of it if i (even temporally) screwed up the family's wii. My wife is already worried about me screwing up the wii with a drivekey. I much less confused about the drivekey now, but still just as confused about softmods

Yes it can be quite daunting at first. However this site has alot of useful, well written guides to help you through the process and many people are willing to help if your stuck.

I would research the specific chip your getting and see if it has a config menu that allows you to block disk updates.(You never mentioned what system menu version you have now but im assuming not 4.2?) If you can block updates somehow than you will be able to avoid updating to 4.2 and still be able to run pal games.
