i just set up my connection, and when it connected it asked if i wanted to update, when i clicked yes i got a message saying something about - if your wii has any unauthorised modification this update may make your console inoperable or something like that, so i cancelled the update

Just don't accept the update, it doesn't force you and you'll be safe going online.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.

Hey, sorry for bringing up an old post, but this is the closest post to my question..
I'm trying to connect to my connnection through the wii.
My system is Wii 4.2U NTSC
When I go to "use this connection" (or something like that)
It says do i wanna update, and i tell it no, and it goes to a screen of "Use this connection?" and all it has is the back button, no okay button.. so I can't connect. But I can still connect to download mods through homebrew browser manager (so it's kinda weird...)
But I'm scared to click yes.. What do I do to get my games working online? such as Uno?

well it's done already. When your in game it will use your default connection. There is no need to go in and reset or upgrade anything at this point. If you say yes you will loose your homebrew and have to painfully do it again on 4.2. Rule of thumb is that if it works in your homebrew browser then any game will be able to ultise the connection.
Remember to click the Thanks on the post if I've been helpful.

yes u must update to use the net on the wii and it is safe. u must only use your own region of games as imports will no longer work. i have the drivekey and im connected to the net. i only use my region (pal) anyway. as far as i know if u update with an imported game then i think that could brick ur wii. so go ahead and update and stick to your own region of games

are you stupid? or did you just type the first random words that came into your head?

    It is NOT safe.
You do NOT need to update to use the net on a wii.
Updating on any wii, but especially a hardmodded wii is a BAD idea.

At no point are you forced to update, so just DONT!

he says he has a drive key.

you can upgrade and go online safely. but you will lose the ability to play out of region games. so if youre wii is ntsc and you update online you go to fw 4.2 that wont allow you to boot other region games. thats the only thing that can happen.

and if you dont trust it, you can disable drivekey in drivekeymenu. than update. a lot of people done it. so why cant you?
