    Should I wait?

I just bought a Wii, but it is already updated to 4.2..
I'm debating on buying a drivekey chip but I've been reading about it and it seems that it's not working too well right now because of the update..

So my question is, what should I do?
I was reading about softmodding but I'm honestly not sure if it's possible right now, or I may just be blind and I can't find a tutorial or something.

Or should I just buy the drivekey or wait for another update?
    Thank you! =]

I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I will mention that softmodding a 4.2 system is very possible. I'm running 4.2U and have been able to run every game I've wanted. It took me a lot of reading to understand what I needed to do to the console to get it working perfectly with my backups, so if you're not quite ready to devote a bit time to figuring everything out then yes, a modchip would be a good alternative.

Check out links 2 & 3 in my signature below, and make sure you're familiar with the entire process before starting anything, if that's what you decide. Cheers.

Edit: I should mention that if your Wii is brand new, there's a strong chance it has the D3-2 drive which, currently, is unable to play backup dvds. If that were the case, you would then only have the option of loading backups via usb hard drives. So far as I know, this means your system would require softmodding (anyone correct me if I'm wrong).

well i've modded a xbox 360 before, so devoting my time to modding a wii will be no problem. =]

Drivekey is working fine for all of my games except NSMB. They are working on an update for that. You may want to check to see if your Wii is able to be modded by a chip. Check your serial #. There are some alternate solutions to softmods if your wii has the unmoddable drive in it. D2sun, has a couple of solutions and WODE that would only work with iso's.

I just bought and installed a drive key, im using the 4.2u update and the only problem i have is with the NSMB it loads up, but after selecting start, it just goes back to the wii menu. all of my other games all work, both origonal and back up. i havent tried playing any pal games, only ntsc and i burn my isos on memorex dvd-r at 4x and this was posted at the drivekey site a couple of days ago.

latest news2009-11-26 >> NSMB fixed on DriveKey!
We have fixed the NSMB issue in DriveKey. The updated firmware will be in all chips shipping from Monday 30th November. We will also be providing an update for existing DriveKey owners, which will be released as soon as the JTAG programmer is ready. In the near future we will also publish a standard for appending BCA data at the end of the ISO image, so that any new game with this new protection will work without any update of the chip. The actual game ISO will remain unmodified.

the drivekey is a great option, if you want it to be compatible with NSMB we are getting that version very soon (preprogrammed)
The jtag programmers will be available soon as well hopefully and we will be selling as close to cost as possible.

Now having said that, you need to check what chipset your wii has, PM me serial if you like or use www.wiidrives.com when its back up and it will tell you the odds.

If its a D3-2 then your options change, either replace the board PCB, go with a chip like WiiKey Fusion or Wode, even SunDriver

You can also change the drive board with an older D2B, D2C etc... can find them at most mod shops or on ebay.
