WiiBrickBlocker worked fine for me
I bought my Wii just before this past Thanksgiving. I installed the Drivekey with the NSMB update. Nothing worked. I had the latest drive, the only one that was not compatible with the Drivekey. Just my luck. I swapped out my drive to one that worked with the Drivekey and no problems. Lucky for me my Wii came with menu 4.0 and I did not upgrade to 4.2 With some downloaded Wii game iso's, when I put them in the Wii, I immediately received a message to update my Wii. I didn't do it. I contacted the vendor I bought my Drivekey from and was told that if I updated to menu 4.2 that my Wii would now only be able to play NTSC games even with the Drivekey installed. I received the message to update about 4 times. The latest one being a few days ago with Final Fantasy Crystal Bearer. Lucky for me I hadn't deleted the iso file yet. A good friend of mine told me about WiiBrickBlocker that removes the need for the update. So I used WiiBrickBlocker (v1.3R by Rockman) on the same iso file before burning it and this time it worked absolutely fine. My friend also told me about Regionfrii but the Drivekey allows any region Wii game to play on your Wii.

drivekey stop working SORT OFF
Will this work? :O
so guys iv read through this thread but just to get some clarification:
a wii with drivekey and 4.2 firmware installed with only play the same region originals AND backups?
so in my case, i have a pal system so only pal original and backups will work?
if so then i shouldnt have a problem as i only download pal versions, and also use brickblocker so the games do not ask for updates.
i havent really played any new games or used the wii for a while so im not too sure, and thankfully i havent updated the firmware on my wii from 4.1 with my d2pro.
the drivekey is for a friend which i will be installing for him, so i just wanted to know if it will work or not.
also will newer games that require 4.2 not work if i use brickblocker or stick to 4.1?
any suggestions would be great.

Get the drivekey with the NSMB update and don't forget to put in the JTAG ribbon for updates or you will have to go back into your case when an update is required to play a game. My Drivekey came with the optional JTAG ribbon. I have seen some drivekeys for sale without it. I heard that there is a $20 fee for the JTAG programer (which you will need for future games that require it). I would not rush out and get the programmer until you are sure you need it. Try regionfrii v1.21 before burning the game. It will let you play any download PAL or NTSC on the Wii with the drivekey with menu 4.2. This way you are not limited to PAL downloads only. You don't have to use wiibrickblocker all the time. I only use it when I play a backup and the update screen pops up I burn it again using wiibrickblocker (thats only happened about 4 times in 160 for me). The Drivekey lets you play any region on any console. If you have the drivekey on a wii with menu 4.2 then use regionfrii. Also use real good quality discs. Don't cut costs here or you will get poor burns resulting in many failures. Wii downloads tend to be very fickle. I pay about 30 to 40 cents a disc for Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims (NOT THE VALULINE) and use ONLY Imgburn. This program lets you use DVD+R discs as DVD-R. When installing the drivekey tape it to the motherboard. It fits better. Insulate the MB with electrical tape then tape the drivekey to it then cover the drivekey with electrical tape and don't cover the breather hole in the MB. This will save you a lot of time over putting it anyplace else. If you soft mod I have no suggestions for that since I only hard mod.
1 User Says Thank You Timewarpone For This Useful Post
thanks for the advice, il bare that in mind.
i do use regionfrii as well, as you say with brickblocker its not needed all the time but i just use both of them so that i dont have to burn another disc.
i have always used sony dvd-r and they have always worked 1st time, i also just burn at the slowest speed, agen just to save having to do it again if it doesnt work.
going back to the drivekey, i assume the NSMB update will require me to get the programmer right? as you said not to get it unless im sure il need it. i found out from my mate that he is on 4.1 still so i will probably just leave it on that fw and install it for him.
i forgot about the updates and jtag before i got the drivekey, as i probably would have opted for a dvd update in preference.
just realised what NSMB is, yeh the drivekey i got is the yellow sticker 1 and it says that it solves the problem with NSMB.
i should not have to update anything then should i?

If your Drivekey has the yellow sticker on the bottom then no update is necessary to play NSMB. It is just a matter of finding a torrent that will work. Contact your point of sale to be sure. Also be aware that there are a lot of drivekey clones on the market that may or may not work. PERIOD!!!! I recommend only getting one through an authorized dealer. If your like me who likes to download a lot, the money you save in buying a genuine one is tremendous (especially for peace of mind). Also, as far as I know, there is no option for a DVD update. Only a JTAG update. Why, who knows. Maybe it's a marketing ploy. A way of generating more income for the developers. We will never know the truth. On one hand I feel ALL future updates should be included FREE from your point of sale. That's a great way for the manufacturer to say to the public "I REALLY CARE ABOUT YOU" .That alone would speak volume in future sales. Word of mouth is your greatest resource. On the other hand, the manufacturer loses a lot of money to people who clone their devices. They may need the money just to stay alive. What if the manufacturer got up one day and said "I QUIT" it's not worth the trouble anymore to develop this stuff. Where would we be then???
I've had hit or miss results using regionfrii on a 4.2NTSC-U system. Some games work, while others won't convert. Also thought I should mention that I have been able to play some PAL games as well without converting (trivial pursuit PAL). So, I think it's more than just a region issue. I haven't found a NTSC game that hasn't played for me. even a NTSC rawdump of NSMB worked. For anyone looking for an option to play out of region games, I recommend softmodding and using USB loader GX. It's really pretty awesome. Has a sweet interface, auto downloads cover art, can keep individual game settings (for out of region games), you don't even have to get up to change the game, USB loads faster than DVD, no more burning failed discs... the list goes on and on. I'll definitely keep my drivekey just in case, but ... usb loaders are awesome.
Does the Drivekey have to be removed to use USB Loader GX ?? Thanks.
thanks again for your response, i think the chip is genuine i came across a post where a guy had a drivekey with a blank chip on it, nothing printed on like alctel or something like that.
with regards to the whole update thing, well i brought a d2pro a few years ago from the same people and never had a problem with it, and apparently they dont provide anymore support. iv never had to update it so far. obviously the newer chips are better and easier to install so they stopped making the d2pro.
there is 1 issue for my console with the d2pro, i downloaded NSMB, later i found out that most of the downloads are for usb loaders, i havent been able to find a dvd one.
before i found out i burned a copy and played it, completed the 1st level and then i got a blank screen with an error message telling me to eject the game and restart.
i think this is because it was meant for the usb loader right?
my friends drivekey will be installed at the weekend so il update after that.
I had similars problems with NSMB downloads. I downloaded 8 different torrents before I found one that worked with my drivekey which has the NSMB update. (I use Taiyo Yudens or Vebatim with Imgburn burning at 4x and I shut off my internet connection and don't use the computer for anything else only during the burn just to be sure) Before I knew about Wiibrickblocker 3 of the downloads I tried came up with the update screen. I really thought I had a deffective Drivekey until download number 8 worked like a charm. I have had many games designated for use with a USB loader work fine with my Drivekey. The only thing I can suggest about downloads not working all the way through the game might be the discs you are using and the program to burn them. I keep a bunch of Verbatim discs as a backup just in case but I have never had a game not play all the way through. Whenever I had a non-working game it was always right after I hit the start button. It either works or it doesn't (for me anyway). Also, even though the drivekey is supposed to work with any region game it is not foolproof. There are some PAL games (on my NTSC wii) that will not work even if you use Regionfrii so if I have a choice I always try to download an NTSC version first even if it takes a little longer. (Also try to port forward your router. This really helps with download speeds.) Thats the luck of the draw I guess. The bottm line for me is how bad I want the game. As far as updating the drivekey, I haven't had to go that route yet. One thing for sure. I will never update my Wii's menu.
