I just bought Drive key, estimated arrival next week.
SO was going thorugh different forums, to see on what to do once i have installed the chip. I read the Wii Softmodding for Dummies 4.1. Just had a quick question do i have to do all that explained in it, even if im using drive key to play burned and play PAL games on NTSC console??

No, if you just want to play backup games, you are good to go with the DriveKey chip alone. If you have a modchip like DriveKey, you would only want to softmod your Wii if you want to use homebrew applications (or play VC or WiiWare games).

ive been reading so much about how to prevent from bricking you Wii....
so what I've decided is get the latest update (4.1U at the moment),turn off Wiiconnect 24, and then try to play pal/ntsc backup games on my NTSC Wii.(never update anything else asked by the game what so ever)
If I'm wrong or you have additional tips that will prevent me from bricking my wii, I will be really thankful.
can anyone tell me what is the best brand of dvd to use for it that i can buy in states(also which store if possible)?
I know standard dvd's(cheap ones) wont work....
There are very mixed reports about which media brands and burn speeds work best. It seems that if you want to be on the safe side you should use Verbatim DVD-R media and burn at max 4x speed. However, many of us have experienced that any brand of media works, and also at any burn speed... It seems to be related to the type of Wii disc drive you have - and AFAIK the issue is the same with all modchips, not just DriveKey.

Like most other modchips DriveKey has a feature which blocks updates from out-of-region game discs (which is where you risk the bricking). Just leave the default setting in the DriveKey config menu to "Imports". This will allow you to update from game discs from the same region as your Wii, and from the internet, which is perfectly fine. This way you do not risk bricking your Wii whatsoever. Disclaimer: If you have softmodded your Wii (with or without a modchip installed), updating the Wii system menu may cause the softmodding to disappear and/or potentially brick your Wii.
