I've been having a bit of a problem trying to run some NTSC games on my drivekey modded pal machine. I've been trying various things and the conclusion I've been able to make so far is that the NTSC games that aren't working, will try to update my firmware when I turn the update protection off. Obviously allowing this update will brick my machine so it's not an option. When I leave the protection on, I'll get a black screen. Notice that this is a knows issue when trying to play cross region games on a wii that is not updated with new enough firmware. Which explains the problem and it's easy to solve.
the weird part about this is that my Wii is already updated to the latest pal version, and the games i'm trying to play are fire emblem and Resident evil Archives. Now i'm pretty sure that fire emblem is far from a new game and should not require a firmware update.
anyone know how I can deal with this apart from trying to find a PAL version of my games (which is what i'm doing right now, but i'd like to be able to play NTSC as well)?
Several users have reported problems playing cross-region games despite they have the newest version of the Wii System Menu for their region.
On my PAL Wii with 4.1E I can't play Ghostbusters (USA-NTSC version), WarioWare: Smooth Moves (USA-NTSC version) or Smooth Moves (Korea-NTSC version), but a lot of other USA-NTSC version games work just fine.
So I suspect it's a more general problem caused by either DriveKey or technical limitations of the Wii (perhaps related to different versions of the Wii disc drive) in relation to playing certain out-of-region games.
(Cases of games not working are quite difficult to troubleshoot, as there are many variables, which could affect it. I assume your Wii is not softmodded, and that you use unscrubbed games and also that the problems are not caused by a bad burn)
to assure maximum compatibility one should create there own 1:1 backups of in region games. whenever u try using out of region and downloaded games there are so many variables to consider when diagnosing a problem. you will probably have better success finding a solution by researching on ur own instead of asking someone on here, because we know little about ur system and setup.

you can try something called regionfrii, it will change the rejoin of the disk and then you can download the update, even if your import blockers on, it will allow you to download an update.
Tried a pal version of RE: archives today, worked fine. Can't find a fire emblem PAL version tho.

Not softmodded, unscrubbed (did try 1 scrub, didn't work), definitely not bad burns. The discs are readable. it seems to be some kind of firmware mismatch issue between my PAL console and some NTSC game.

I understand what you mean, when factoring in the possibility of a sub-optimal DVD-writer, different brands of discs and different write settings there are too many variables to make into a useful forum discussion.
However, in my case. The hardware is fine, the discs are fine, it's a firmware issue. I was hoping someone might have encountered the problem and found a solution, even though I wasn't able to find one by searching these (and other boards).

so that may work, give it a try and pm me.
Tried it. The only difference is that my chip doesn't try to block the update because it recognizes the pal game. But the game still wants to flash my firmware (which is already up to date). And the firmware data is probably still NTSC data, which means i'd probably brick my wii.

Are you sure your television is 60Hz NTSC compatable, that would explain the black screen . If your tv won't recieve that signal it will just display a black screen or black and white gameplay.
