Unhappy Some PAL games doesn't work on my Japanese WII with Drivekey

    Hi,

I have 4.0 and japanese wii...

Some of the backup games work like mario kart but some of them like
    -Super Mario Galaxy(PAL)
    -Pro Evolution Soccer 2009(PAL)
    -Pikmin(PAL)
-Call of Duty World at War(PAL)

    doesn't work.
All of them shows up in the dvd channel but when I start it comes only black screen?

    Any others have similara experience??

    Hi:
I have a north american Wii with 3.2U and a drivekey. It seems I have the same problem as you. I had no problem with some PAL games but I tried a PAL PES 2009 and I can see the game on the DVD channel but when I select it, the screen comes balck.
Did you find a solution or an advise?
    Thanks!

@mkliba: Most likely what's happening is that the game requires a newer firmware than 3.2 to play and tries to update from the game disc. Since that would be an out of region update, which would brick your Wii, DriveKey is blocking for the disc update causing the game to hault.

You need to either update to 4.0u (by using a system update via the internet from the Wii Settings screen, or by updating from a new NTSC game disc), or install the separate cIOS packages needed to play the game. Search around for info on the latter solution if you're not familiar with it.

NB! It is possible to turn off the DriveKey out of region update block function via the built-in DriveKey config menu. But due to the eminent risk of bricking your Wii you should never change this particular setting.

@canko: You already have firmware 4.0 installed, and so your problem is not the same as the other user's. I'm sorry, I don't have a clue what's causing the problem you experience...

Thanks for your answer. In fact I made a downgrade from 3.4U to 3.2U following the advise of almost everyone around. I have been avoiding upgrading to 4.0u because I installed HBC which I meanly use to dump games using DVDdumper or to play .avi or divx with any of the Media player available for HBC, and despite everybody seems to say it’s safe to upgrade to 4.0U when you already have HBC installed, I can’t find a clear answer stating if things like the DVD dumper or MPlayer can still be used with HBC and system firmware 4.0U.
By the way, I copied once a Mario Kart NTSC and it asked me for an update, I denied access to the Wii on my router to internet and asked for the update on the Wii, I don’t know what it did, but my firmware remained at 3.2U and I playing my Mario Kart copy without any problem.
So, what do you recommend me to do? Can I upgrade to 4.0U and still be able to use HBC for dumping and playing media files or it’s better to find a cIOS to play games like PES 2009 in PAL?
    Thanks for the advise.

I haven't installed the HBC myself, so I don't know. I, too, have seen the question asked many times but not answered clearly.

However, apparently the 4.0 firmware has now been hacked as well. I found this thread, though it seems to be limited to "virgin" Wiis (not previously having HBC installed?).

Thanks, but the same, it's just how to install HBC on a 4.0 Wii. Still no clear what can we make or not with HBC and 4.0.

i have exactly the same problem as this guy and it's driving me insane.

everything i have tried except mario galaxy works, including installing custom wads. just now i tried downgrading to 3.2J but same problem.

occasionally i can get mario galaxy to work by tinkering with the video settings, but it is always in black and white and always freezes at the same point in the intro.
