Thread: DriveKey Dead?

It seems to be that many people have the same problem, and DriveKey seems to be aware of that. They posted yesterday the following:

Over the last few days, we have been made aware of a problem affecting a small number of DriveKey chips in circulation. This problem only affects DriveKey chips with a W3 diode (next to the LEDs) when installed in a Wii with a silver drive cable. If you are able to play backup game discs but not original game discs, you may be affected. Please contact your point of sale for details on how to proceed and rest assured that the DriveKey team are 100% committed to solving this issue for everyone.

I have reported the issue, but I hasn't received any answer. I wonder if we are going to receive a replacement chip or if there is going to be an firmware update.

My guess is a new chip but you have a 100% guarantee that each single case will be resolved from DriveKey. Their support can't get any better then that. The easiest fix for everyone involved would be a firmware update that people could download, burn to disk and update their DriveKey that way. However if that were the fix they have in mind, they would probably not be directing persons to their point of sale.

It sounds like DriveKey is on top of the issue and they are currently in communications with each point of sale to implement the cure. It's in their best interest to resolve each issue as quickly as possible.

I thank everyone for their input. I have contacted the seller and am arranging for a replacement. I will keep updating this thread as I go.

Okay guys. I just got my drivekey in and set it up tonight.

I am having the same issue exact issue. The dip switches are correct for USA I know for sure cuase I checked them a 100 times.

It has nothing to do with a DISK...because I get the error message with NO disk in the unit when I hit the eject button 3 times to try to get to the Drivekey menu.

I hit the eject button three times and the red light comes on the unit and I get the error message. So I reboot and try again the eject again three times...same message. Afterng this 100 times...I quit.

So lets try this

I turn it off and reboot and it goes to the Wii menu...I insert the game Wii Sport "official disk" and I get the message. I try this 100 times...same error message.

I am at my wits end...I checked all the cable 100 times...they are on and secure and correct.

It has to be a bad Drivekey OR something nintendo has done to block this type of KEY. I noticed I have NO epoxy and a Second CHIP is right by the INPUT side where the ribbon cable goes just above the vent for the laser.

I noticed that this is a difference than the image of the drive on the DRIVEKEY website instructions.

Anyway I need help...anyone have any ideas???

I can confirm the exact same experience... Not disk related... Confirmed all connections and DIP switch settings multiple times... Nothing but errors...

I had the same problem as the above posters at first. i realized i had revered the "DVD" and "WII" slots..

Not the issue...I checked a 100 times...had my kid even look at it.

The chip just sucks...bad manufacturing OR quality control in the run.

Now I have to wait 3 - 4 more weeks just to see if the new one that is being sent to me (after I pay to send the bad one back) will work or not.

Right now it is probably less than a coin toss that it will. I am seeing a lot of other people on other sites having all kinds of issue with the new ribbon cable style of chip.

It has to be all manufacturing related because it's just too easy to install it and too easy to hit an eject button three times to call up the screen.

Let's not make excuses for the manufacturer.

Okay I understand if people haven't done there homework on this chip HACKING industry...but I did my homework.

I know fully that you have to use -r disks NOT +R or RW and they can't be shit disks. They pretty much have to be Verbatim OR 1 other disk. NOT SONY, TDK, or MEMOREX.

This is not rocket science.
