this is used to update the firmware if they release any...which they have. So if you're going to order soon, I'd personally buy it. However I'm putting it off for a couple months to make sure they work out the bugs and I don't need to spend the extra $25 for the programmer.

I just read that D2Pro makers will be giving a new firmware sometime in the next week that will allow updates via DVD instead of the programmer. So...wait a month and buy it so you don't have to spend the extra money on a programmer that will soon be worthless.

I found this after submitting an e-mail to the tech support team of D2Pro asking that very question 5 minutes ago. I'll post what they reply back with as well to confirm it.

The different between d2pro and d2pro9 is D2pro9 has less wire and it has auto region free no need for soldering 4 extrawire like d2pro. They are the same chip. And D2Pro or D2pro9 both updateable via DVD if you add a SPI Flash module add on to it. Either way you will have to spend money XD.

Edit: I just got new infos on the d2pro9. It seens that d2pro team is releasing a new firmware next week that will allow the d2pro9 to be flash via DVD, and it going to be supporting d2a and d2b. hre are what i got from their site:
Quote:
There will be a major d2pro 9 wire update released in the next few days. Some of the new features are:
- d2a (dms) and d2b support
- flash can now be updated via dvd
- recovery mode (resets chip to factory default)
- configuration options now selectable by dvd.
