Unhappy Red Light / Inching with D2Pro/WiiClip install on D2C

I have almost exactly the same issue as OP in [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]. I am installing a D2Pro9 from GModz, presoldered into a WiiClip V4C. My drive is a D2C. GModz says the firmware version of the D2Pro is 2.3, which is supposed to fix D2C inching and eject issues. The clip came with the CLK jumper soldered closed.

I initially installed the D2Pro using the WiiClip, without the J wire installed; I made sure the clip was seated properly. I got a solid red LED with no blue flash and no inching sounds. The drive would not load any disks -- the mechanism wouldn't allow them to be inserted.

Next I opened the CLK jumper and installed the J wire. The red LED was still solid, but I now got inching sounds and the drive would attempt to slowly load a disk in small increments. I assume this is the inching behavior. I didn't let it load fully so that I wouldn't have to deal with getting it back out.

At this point, I called GModz and asked for advice. He suggested routing the J wire over the oscillator. I tried that, but no change.

At this point, I started to wonder if there might be a problem with the WiiClip, so I carefully removed it and checked the pins with a 10x loupe. Everything looked good, so I reinstalled it and tried everything once more, both with and without the J wire. Everything was still exactly the same.

Still not sure about the WiiClip, I decided to do a solder install. After getting everything in, I got the same behavior as with the J wire installed: solid red LED with inching sounds.

My best guess now based on what I have been able to piece together is that there is a firmware incompatibility between my system and the D2Pro. However, I thought that the 2.3 firmware was supposed to fix the inching problem for D2C drives.

I don't have a D2Prog, and I don't want to try to boot the Wii with the D2Pro installed and inching because other threads have said that drives are being damaged in that mode. Is there any way I can tell what firmware revision I have? Is there a version that is likely to fix my problem? If so, do I need a D2Prog to flash the chip? GModz said I could send in my drive and chip and they would do the install, but I live in California so that would be a pain in the butt that I would prefer to avoid if possible.

Thanks for any help you can give.

your problem seems to be that the firmware is not 2.3

burn the 1.6 update iso and it will tell you where your at with the hardware, here is direct link:

I don't think burning the iso will do me any good. I removed the chip because I keep seeing that the inching issue is damaging drives (see [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register] for example). Without the chip installed and working, I can't boot the burned 1.6 disk.

I am thinking my only options at this point are to try to return it to GModz or get the D2Prog and see if some combination of firmware / SPI flash will fix it. Does anyone have a specific recommendation about a firmware/flash combination that will fix my issues for my setup?

hey bro....I saw your plea and I 've seen you quoted on my post, my advice don't waste your money on buying the programmer, get either the wasabi v3 chip or the D2E-A9 modchip instead. They have less issues than the D2Pro chips.
Thanks everyone for the great support.
Hope to hear from you soon, cause i'm getting ready to retire from the modding scene.

Thanks for your advice. I feel like I should acknowledge GModz at this point. They have been working with me and have been very accommodating with respect to getting this fixed. They offered to exchange my current chip, or take it back and install it for me. I have decided to return what I have and get a pre-modded D2B board for my drive, so that I always have my unmodded D2C board as a backup. GModz offer the board with either WiiKey, Wasabi V2 or D2Pro9; I assume you would recommend the Wasabi, but does it have any advantages over the WiiKey when used with a D2B board?

The whole thing is sort of frustrating because I have decent soldering skills and feel like I could get by with just a chip, if I could only be sure that I would end up with a compatible part. Sending things back and forth across borders and continents is not a good way to troubleshoot incompatibilities. Buying the premodded board will hopefully eliminate all of that uncertainty.

you need to match you d2c drive with a modded replacement d2c drive for the wii motherboard to accept it cause differnt drives uses different signals, processing signals and voltages.
Thanks everyone for the great support.

massspecgeek, sorry to here you are having troubles. We will get you going asap. For the replacement d2b board, the wiikey performs just as well as the wasabi or d2pro but it is your choice. In terms of replacing the board into your existing drive, it will work 100% because we have replaced and fixed quite a few drives and haven't had any issues with the replacement boards.

i did have the inching issue, but got around it by only powering off the wii, with a disc in it. that is, until i got the d2prog

it is my experience that the inching only happens when you turn the wii on without a disc in, and then the first disc to go in inches, but those after do not

---mind you, if i know what i knew now, i would have bought a pre-modded board for a simple swap, i think its a good idea and good to have the spare too so props to you massspecgeek

updating to the latest hardware firmware will sort out any issue. really, this should be standard now, its not forgiveable for sellers to sell out of date chips. a lot of places will flash it for you, but the d2prog is cheap so i wasnt bothered in ordering one
