This worked pretty well for me. Just got through playing through the mini-castle in World 1. After about 30-40 min, just got a disc error. But this time more along the lines of "The disc could not be read." than the usual disc error that you get with NSMB.

But I think it should be fine. Thank you for this guide.

And like everyone else, I too prefer the load disc method. Softmod feels too unreliable as far as always having to install new IOS and loaders.

Hi, I am new to the hacking process. I followed all the steps and was very hopefully, I did not get the Error #002 message I was getting before. Instead it mentions that it will be loading the game, provides the details and then goes to a green screen. After that it boots the Wii menu. Any help would be great.

One problem most likely is that the settings menu tells me I have 4.2u I was hoping this wouldn't be a problem because I don't think I actually have the whole update. It never started updating when I went to do it and it still says I have to update my system if I try to access the wii menu disc channel or shop channel.

    Thanks, it works for me. Wii + D2pro + 4.1U + HBC + CIOS53 + NeoGamma R8 Beta 12 + NSMB unpatched on dvd.

I don't have anything else installed. This was the first time I softmod my wii. No other IOS, and software installed. It even works without loading the .dol on SD card. Been playing for like 2 hours.

Guide for d2pro users on 4.1u:

Required: blank DVD-R, SD Card, Card Reader, Internet Connected Wii
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Turn Off WiiConnect24 and unplug any GC controllers or memory cards*
*Burn your unpatched NSMB backup image to a DVD-R @ 4x or desired speed*
*Insert it into your wii. Allow it to update your system if it asks you to update. Don't worry, it will not update you to 4.2u* (Can someone confirm this? It only updated me to 4.1, but I'd like to be certain)

    ***REQUIRED FILES***
    IOS53_v5149 WAD: IOS53_v5149.wad.zip
    NeoGamma R8 beta7: NeoGamma.zip
    SMNE.dol (nuclearda): SMNE.dol.zip
    dop-ios v8: dopios_v8.zip
    Homebrew Channel Installer: hbc_for_4.0.zip
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1) If you do not already have it installed, download the "Homebrew Channel" (HBC)
    from the provided link.

    2) Copy the contents of the Homebrew Channel package to the root of your SD Card (private folder & boot.elf)

    -----

    3) Insert the SD card into your wii and turn it on. Go to Settings -> Data Management -> SD and press yes when prompted to load "boot.dol"

    4) Once you reach the menu that gives you options of installing "Homebrew Channel, BootMii, or DVDx, highlight HomeBrew Channel, and press A.

    5) After installing and letting HBC start, it will prompt you to update. Proceed with the update. After it finishes downloading the update files you will be prompted with the same installation menu with HBC, BootMii, and DVDx. Once again install HBC and let it load to the HBC menu. You may now exit to the home screen and eject your sd card.

    ------

    6) Back on your computer, delete the boot.elf file from the root and create 2 folders in the root of your sd: name one "apps", the other "wad"

    7) Download NeoGamma and place the NeoGamma folder into the "apps" folder on your sd

    8) Download dop-ios and place the dop-ios folder into your apps folder

    9) Create a new folder in the root of your sd card called "NeoGamma" (NOTE: this folder IS separate from the NeoGamma folder you placed in the apps folder.

    10) Download ios53_v5149.wad and place it into your "wad" folder

    11) Download SMNE.dol, and place it into your NeoGamma (root) folder
***Thanks to nuclearda for his edited dol***

    ------

    12) Insert your sd card into your wii and select HomeBrew Channel from the home screen. You should now be greeted with a list of homebrew on your wii, notably NeoGamma, dop-ios, and if you installed it, Wad Manager.

    13) Select dop-ios and run it.

    14) Press right on the d-pad until you reach ios53. Select it and press update, also press add signature patch. It should now proceede to update 14 NAND blocks on the wii's internal memory. If an error is returned (-1), ignore it.

    15) Exit to the homebrew channel and now open NeoGamma.

    16) In the NeoGamma options, highlight "alt .dol" and press right on the d-pad until it shows "SD". Then select "Save Config" and return to the main NeoGamma menu.

    17) Hit "Launch DVD"

    18) Enjoy your game.

    ----------------------------
    Hello all,
Appreciate any help that anyone can give me. I actually have a Wasabi DX solderless boot and tried all of the items listed above with no luck. When NeoGamma loads it will go a green screen, then black with green streaks and the Wii menu will show up again.
A question, I get a message that says "you are not using IOS249 If you know what you are doing ok, @all others: Install a CIOS Press any key to continue" when I start up NeoGamma. I can't figure out if I need to install a cIOS, and how. Any help appreciated.

When I try to run the Wii disk directly, it will show the wii strap warning and then go back to the main menu. My other Wii backup disks still work.

    Thanks

This was extremely helpful. After hours of frustration from other posts, this was clear and easy. I had to update to 4.1 from 3.2, but I was glad to do so. The fix for Mario, albeit a pain having to use the NeoGamma preloader is a pain, now lets us enjoy this great game.

On the other hand, playing with my wife and daughter is challenging. We are too competitive, and this game requires co-operation! We played for 1.5 hours, and now are all very angry at each other.

This community is so helpful. Thanks so much.

First, just wanted to say, torange, you're awesome for such a straightforward guide. Without NeoGamma and other steps, was only able to play about 5-10 minutes of NSMB on a d2pro chipped Wii before getting a disc read error. After following these steps, I was able to play for a good 2 hours straight today. Yes it does defeat the purpose of the hardware mod, but at least it's easier than opening up the Wii to install the mod chip in the first place.

thank you very much, worked great, it does not give me that stupid error that i was receiving every 5-10 minutes... however your tutorial is not very helpful for a beginner...i couldn't load neogamma at all...i would just get a black screen...however i googled my butt off looking for how to install those cIOS needed for wad manager...and etc etc...but thanks...it worked overall! played Super mario bros wii for an hour without any problems
