What DVD-R Media/Writer To Use?

Hey all,
I've been trying for quite some time now to succesfully burn a backup that my Wii can read, but have had NO success so far :(
The problem I'm having, as far as I can see, is that my DVD writer cannot burn at speeds any lower than 4X. The default DVD drive installed on my computer could not burn any slower than 6X, and so I went out and bought a Lite-on drive, which NeroInfoTools tells me can burn at a minimum of 4X - my usage of imgburn has confirmed this, as if I try to burn at speeds slower than 4X, I get a 'speed miscompare' error.
I guess what I'm asking for is for someone to please recommend a combo of DVD-R media and DVD writer brands that they know work near enough every time, and a lil' bit of info on what write speeds i should use :$

In imgburn try this.
Put in one of your blank dvd's.
Then go to: tools/automatic write speed and click on picture with cd and green arrow. Change write speed to 2.4x and press ok.

i still get the 'write speed miscompare' error, and my dvd ends up being burned at a 4X speed, or 6X, depending on the drive I use...
any other solutions?
or recommendations as to what drive/dvd media i should use?

If it's burned at 4x you should'nt have any problems!
Are you using dvd-r discs?

yeeerrrp, sure am, phillips dvd-r, I know they work fine for burning backups - a mate of mine managed just fine with 'em, that's why I'm thinking it must be my drive that's the problem...

Im using this dvd burner Newegg.com - Pioneer Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 40X CD-R 32X CD-RW 2MB Cache IDE CD/DVD Burner LabelFlash Support - CD / DVD Burners with these media LG Storage media - DVD-R - 16x 4.7 GB Burned at 2X speed and every single burn works. Haven't had a coaster with them yet.

just an errant thought, does anybody know whether it's worth just buying a portable hard drive and running backups off that instead?
it's just, I've heard it's faster and much easier :$

I've never researched drives. I always get the cheapo $20 one's and they work fine. If nothing else, you have another drive. (Just another thought. Not trying to kick thunc's advice, lol)

Try switching to Verbatim -R first and try burning those even at 4x or 6x and I am sure that would work.
