MD5 checksums for wbfs backups - master listing [please contribute]

I have began an effort to backup my Wii games to USB hard drive as they are pretty cheap now for 1TB of space.

The issue I have is that some discs are heavily scratched from child usage, etc. So I decided the best way to verify a good dump of game versus a bad dump was to match my MD5 checksum to a list of confirmed MD5 for same game.

But this is where I am getting stuck, seems the gametdb only has MD5 or SHA1 hashes for the full ISO file type and not the typical loader dump format of WBFS. So none of those hashes matched any of my wbfs game dumps. So in an effort to help others and myself, I decided I would compile a master list in this thread of game MD5's by verifying same MD5 for a wbfs game file from 3 sources.

Should gametdb want this information, I will provide it to them in a format they can easily import into their database.

I will start by posting mine (3rd post - which is pending mod approval). This list was easily compiled by connecting my drive to my desktop and running a free program called ExactFile that will dump of list of MD5's by looking at all files in a folder. Its multi-threaded so it can run very fast on good machines with multiple cores (i.e. dual core, quad core). You can see from my list that the 4th letter in each game code is "E", so these are all NTSC-U games.

So if you are having game playing issues, this will be a quick way to verify if your game backup is valid.

This listing can also benefit you in the future as well, since the ExactFile tool also can verify files against a checksum listing (they call it digest file) and can be used to verify your files are intact in the future and unharmed by any file corruption.

Please post your MD5 listing and I will compile these weekly into the 2nd thread post.

Guide to Using ExactFile to post MD5 checksum listings:

    - click on settings and set the number of threads accordingly. I have quad core so I set it to 4. This will allow it to compute checksums for multiple files
    - select the "Create Digest" tab
    - drag the the wbfs folder onto program window or select the folder from "..." button
    - check "Include subfolders", leave unchecked "Include full paths"
    - no click go and wait

NOTE: Feel safe, this programs only reads the game files; it does NOT modify them.

Interesting idea. I'll hash mine later today.

    EDIT:

    All games are NTSC-U

I think it fairly obvious, but let's make sure it's here: if you contribute to this thread, it better be with RETAIL disc information! Anything else (aside even from forum rules concern) could skew the results and leave some folks unnecessarily confused or think issue with their legitimate backups.

Odd, I compared several titles to yours and my hashes are all different (mind is 2nd MD5 below). I would assume that file systems would not matter (ntfs vs fat) and yours are also NTSC-U.

How did you backup your games? These are retail and unpatched correct?
I wonder if maybe difference occurs if someone goes from an ISO backup on the drive to wbfs using Wii Backup Manager.

Perhaps others can post the hashes for these 4 as well so we can see what consensus is.

MD5's should not differ for same file. Mine are all retail and unpatched images taken using GX loader.

I am going to do a test today with New Super Mario and backup it up again to both my fat32 and then ntfs to see if hash differs.

I am curious is their a way for me to try a full ISO backup of one of my games. Currently all loaders default to wbfs. I'll see if one of the loaders has this option. Then I can compare that ISO MD5 to the one on gametdb

NTFS does compression, but I'm not sure if that would affect the hash or not (I don't use it as I'm not a Windows user). I actually hashed them from my local backup on an EXT4 drive. Maybe I'll try off the rips on my external drive that's hooked up to my Wii. And look into CleanRip, that'll rip to a full ISO.

Yep, but that requires a specific DVD-ROM drive to rip it.

I just got back from Target (Dept. store here in US) and they had Kirby Epic Yarn on sale for $20, so grabbed it for my daughter. So this disc will be spotless, so I will do the backup to drive and contribute hash here.
If anyone has Kirby Epic Yarn NTSC-U, please post your MD5 hash.

CleanRip is a homebrew app. Get it here.

Best way to verify a dump is with
    WIT: Wiimms ISO Tools

    Just do
    wit verify game.iso -vvv
    or
    wit verify game.wbfs -vvv
    or
    wit verify -r hdd:\wbfs\ -vvv
It will check the hash in the game's tmd with the content, if it is bad it will let you know.
